Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review:
In a nutshell:
Grand Theft Auto might give you the freedom of a whole city or county but in Just Cause you've got the task of overthrowing a 250,000 acre island all on your lonesome in the world's first Che Guevara simulator.

The lowdown:
Taking inspiration not just from Grand Theft Auto but also Mercenaries and old Amiga classic Midwinter you play CIA black ops agent Rico Rodriguez as he attempts to overthrow the evil dictator of the fictional island of San Esperito. Despite the huge island and the complete freedom of movement you have on it the game actually only has 21 story missions. There are over 300 side missions but it quickly becomes obvious that these fall into only a very small number of different styles, not all of which are all that entertaining. What makes the game fun though is just wandering off and doing your own thing, which invariably involves upsetting the local military or drug lords and instigating a massive, impromptu firefight. The game may lack depth and variety but it offers a freedom to explore and cause chaos that few others can rival.

Most exciting moment:
As impractical as it may seem you've always got a grappling hook and a parachute, which allows you to lock onto any vehicle and commandeer it whenever you want. It also lets you perform some utterly outrageous stunts as you parasail behind boats and jump from a moving aircraft straight onto a road convoy miles below you.

Since you ask:
Instead of storing the island of San Esperito as a gigantic map the game uses a new technique called procedural synthesis to create the landscape on the fly. This is the only way to make such large scale graphics work on the PS2, especially when you're flying miles above the island.

The bottom line:
Che Guevara meets James Bond in this shallow but satisfying sandbox game.

4 out of 5 stars Love - hate - love   June 7, 2008
I loved this game for the first 30-minutes of play, but once i started to explore the area a bit more I felt the graphics were some of the worst and jaggy I'd ever played on the PS2. But later on, after playing some more and exploring further down the island - and flying the plane and copter etc - I now think this game is pure fun and freedom. In particular the skydiving and base-jumping are both amazing and novel in the gaming world, and thats even without the grappling hook gun, which apparently allows you to hitch a ride on passing planes etc while parachuting. Despite the sometimes iffy graphics, this game is scenic and beautiful in its own right. For example, while escaping from the police on a noisy road I parachuted over to a small remote island as the sun was going down and it felt tranquil and very likeflike. The jungle and woods are also very well done and convincing, with some of the best trees and foliage Ive seen on the PS2, except for mabye Far Cry, and Black, and and...... ;)

Latest update...
Having played this game some more I know realise its actually a very good flight simulator. Most flightsim fans will love it. Flying in first-person view over jungles and mountains, and under bridges etc, is pretty cool, with the added bonus of skydiving from the plane at any time.

4 out of 5 stars Where am I......   December 30, 2007

The title of this review has been chosen because it is the most commomly used phrase by me, playing this game.If you read my other game reviews you will see that I am a great fan of free-roaming games and when I came across this game I was astounded. Of all the games I have played this one offers the most freedom and fun and also gets you completely lost.

Although game allows you to do the most ridiculos stunts imaginamble it would some how be boring without them such as car surfing and rappeling onto planes and helicopters 1km in the air. The amount of variation also impressed me, with 89 veichles to choose from including cars, bikes, planes, helicopters, boats that can all be obtained at some point in the game.

To conclude this without doubt one of the most free and fun games of all time which I think could take GTA over as the best free roaming series ever.

4 out of 5 stars It's a James Bond-style fan's dream come true....   June 19, 2007

I must say that my one complaint about Just Cause on the playstation 2 is that the graphics are not their best for the console but then it more than makes up for that in the free roaming gameplay.

You play the role of Government Agent Rico and start off on this big island. The main story sees you take on this ruthless Dictator and, along the way you end up in some utterly memorable battles. One sees you blowing up a missile base, another sees you skydiving into a boat to access another island and the final one sees you take control of a Harrier Jet Fighter Plane, pass the Dictators passenger jet and skydive onto it when it's in the air followed by a final showdown between you and the dictator as both of you plummet towards doom!

It is really good this and kept me hooked for weeks whilst I made my way through it. The death-defying stunts you can pull off are fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Game but Quite Big   June 1, 2007

This is a fun game, though sometimes the sheer size of the islands you have to travel around is quite overwhelming. The environmental graphics are brilliant, though sometimes can become quite tedious whilst flying, sailing or driving to another mission.
Personally I like this game, though after a while travelling can become quite stressful yet some of the side missions don't require much travelling hence more enjoyable. I love the good old mexicanish music and the amount of different vehicles you can try. Is definitely worth a shot!

3 out of 5 stars Just Cause Review - Not completely Impressed   May 6, 2007

This game is OK. Positives include a massive game area, the chance to parachute and fly a wide variety of air vehicles and a large selection of missions. However, the graphics on this game are very dissapointing, the pS2 version has ps1 like graphics and the controls are annoying too. Furthermore, although there is a large area, the terrain is all the same, and i got bored easily. Give this game a shot if u like games such as mercenaries, if not i wouldnt touch it. I hear the Xbox 360 version is a lot better.
