3 out of 5 stars A cheaper alternative to FSX scenery   June 10, 2007

Owning both FS2002 and FSX, I bought this for FS2002 mainly because it was, on the whole, cheaper, and also because the added scenery wouldn't make the very smoothly running FS2002 go noticeably slower, compared to what might happen with FSX on my mid-range laptop. The main reason for getting it, apart from the visual niceities, was to enable me to fly more realistically on Vatsim (an online multiplayer ATC and flying network extension for Flight Simulator), since I could then go by visual waypoints etc. not visible on FS2002's standard scenery data.
I was moderately pleased with the result - certainly from 4000 feet it was perfect, 2000 feet still worked but looked slightly strange, and below 1000 feet it didn't really make sense at all.
However, it still looks very flat (not that the description implied any terrain data). I haven't tried yet with a terrain expansion, but that's my aim.
The program ran fine with it on, with no noticeable differences apart from the increased loading time (went to about 3 mins. from 15 secs). However, you can turn it off if you just want a quick flight, and the added loading time wasn't much of a problem.

However, I see from reviews of the FSX scenery expansion that it comes with terrain, something that would probably tip the scale in the other direction for me if I had the same choice again. The scenery is probably better, as well...
All in all, it's a reasonable product, although the Amazon price is slightly steep. If you only own FS2002/2004, and want to do something like Vatsim or just fly around your own village, then I would still recommend it.
