A very flawed game May 17, 2008 Horrible, just horrible. First of all this 'deluxe' edition did not come with a paper manual! That does not sound very luxurious to me. Next up we have the horendous instalation/patching/set-up process which took at least 3 hours! Not only that but it takes ages to log on (requiring you to wade through countless menues) and it's all confusing and unfriendly.
After this is the fact that even the game controls are wrong. I mean the 'camera' acts as your head and so you can only move it as far as your head will turn! If you want to look behind you then you will have to turn around! It is a pointless feature that seems like a huge step back from what we've been used to in MMOs and FPS in all these years.
Then comes the fact that everything in this game requires about 3 clicks more than it should do. Even combat requires about 3-4 clicks to initiate and, even then, you won't know how tough the creature is until you've clicked 'check' under one of your 'action' options - everytime you fight! If that were not bad enough then how about the fact that even in the newbie zones there are monsters that are tough enough to kill you! I mean they are literally right outside the city gates!
Not convinced yet? All right then. You can only have one character! If you want more then you have to pay more! In addition to this ridiculous situation is the fact that if you stop playing for more than 3 months - your characters are deleted!
One last thing: the quest tracker is a joke and often leaves you wondering what the hell you are supposed to be doing, and it's probably then that you'll have had enough of this game. I know I did and I'm a hard core FF addict.
average at best November 7, 2007 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
If you're reading this chances you have played another online rpg or just love final fantasy. I recommend you choose another review to read for the full picture however as I'm going to be concentrating on a lot of negative things that ticked me off when I used to play this game.
1.You can level down from dying, quite possibly the biggest sin I've come across in an rpg. Getting a character to maximum is hard enough as it is without a handicap like that making you paranoid about dying, which trust me you WILL DIE a lot, either because of useless party member(s) or an aggro monster cornered you
2. the controls are quite possibly the most complicated I've ever seen for an rpg and takes a lot longer to master, so much so you have over 20 slots for binding commands just for tasks such as warning a party you're about to start a link attack before automatically attacking shortly after.
3. You can barely do anything by yourself after about lv 10 since monsters you can kill stop giving exp points. Although mmorpgs are designed to make friendships, forcing it apon people like that often makes partying a painful experience especially for the new players.
I could go on but these are bad enough points to make you reconsider. It's not a totally bad game, but with faults like this limiting what you can do it just really knocks down the overall quality of the game. If you can get past those big flaws, calling the game epic would be an understatement. only final fantasy fanatics, people with the patience of a saint and ideally fast learners need apply.
Yes it's klunky but at least it lasts more than 4 weeks August 31, 2007 6 out of 11 found this review helpful
The game was first released on the PS/2 and Square Enix have insisted the PC version is no 'better' than that so PC players don't have advantages. This means that the UI is klunky by the standards of WOW and GW.
On the other had, you don't get to max character level in 17 days played as you can in WOW.
It's far harder to play than its' more glitzy competitors and requires far more team play in order to progress: no soloing to max level here, except for one job and even then it's not 100% soloable.
On the other hand there's a deep, very well written story with some amazing cutscenes telling it, with a lore that Square Enix evolve in a way that Blizzard fail to do: FF lore never needs history re-writing, unlike that of the Warcraft series.
So for those players who don't look beyond sleek UIs then FFXI is going to disappoint, but for those where gameplay is more important than looks then it has much to offer.
A Decent Game August 26, 2007 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Im not sure what the other reviewers were doing but after I purchased the game it was a relitively quick install, though I do admit the first patching took a while to complete but no more then 30min.
There are a lot of controls and commands in the game so be sure to read the sheet provided and keep it at hand if your unsure. There is a lot of menu based actions for battle, information, logging out etc which are worth exploring to get familiar with.
If your looking for quests keep in mind the point of an mmorpg is to explore and find the quests for yourself, however a basic search on google will give you all the information you need about in game quests.
While you can use the mouse in game to select menus and change your view I suggest you doing it all via the controls as it is much quicker and easier to do so.
I'm not sure what other reviews are harping on about graphics for they are perfectly fine.
Don't, just don't August 23, 2007 1 out of 19 found this review helpful
You can't see me , but I'm shaking my head.
It is the slow steady shake of a man who has just invested fifteen hundred of his hard earned pennies on a game with no redeemable features whatsoever.
I don't know where to begin.
The install took around 4-5 hours , after which I had hoped for something spectacular to show for my troubles. Sadly it was not to be.
The graphics are grainy and belong to a bygone era, the controls are counter-intuitive and defy redefinition. The configuration has to be done outside of the game and then the game restarted to take effect. The map screen lacks detail and there is no mini-map , a familiar feature in most every game I have since played.
Actions seem to be drop down menu driven - nightmare - not the hotkey bars we all know and love. And simple actions like clicking open a door reacts to your mouse so , so slowly that your not sure if it worked. Lastly , it's not clear who are the quest givers - and the conversations are line by line text based - click, click, click - kill yourself. Similar to a lot of the series to be fair, but with none of the charm.
This is depressing, particularly since I loved the Final Fantasy games of yesteryear , but this is a mockery and deserves nothing but exile to the bottom of the MMORPG pile.
When Scrooge instructed the young urchin in 'A Christmas Carol' to purchase the largest turkey in the shop I'm surprised he didn't come back with this.
Avoid.
