Best Mario Kart Game Ever May 16, 2008 Mario Kart is by far the best game for the Wii in my opinion. The graphics are top-notch. Online play is superb and completely addictive. That's really the only thing I've been playing since I bought the game. I'm glad the game went back to its roots and forget a lot of the changes that the Double Dash made. There's 32 courses in the game, 16 new, 16 old. There really are some well-designed courses in the game. Koopa Cape is one of my favourites. I have to say the Wii Wheel that comes packaged with Mario Kart is a waste of time. I used it on the first game I played and abandoned it after the first lap. I guess it's fun but you need to spend a lot of time in order to get used to it. I now use the Controller/Nunchuk option. It's far easier. Online play is the big draw here and it's so much better than how the DS did it. You can have up to 12 players racing at the same time and you can pretty much find players straight away. You usually join existing races and can watch them until they've finished. Then you can race in the following race. The points system is good but is sometimes unfair at times. Sometimes you can get disconnected by the server losing hundreds of points and it takes ages to build your points back up even if you keep coming first place. Your ghost data in time trials is also uploaded to the servers and you can compare your times to other people's around the globe which is pretty interesting. You can race against other people's ghosts too. A couple of complaints about the game. Blue Shells are more prevalent in this game than the DS game. Once, in one singleplayer match, I was hit five times. I can't tell you how many times I've been playing online only to be hit by a blue shell a few metres from finish line. I guess it makes it easier for players to catch up to first place but blue shells happen far too often. I'd prefer if they had reverted to how the N64 version managed them. Travelling along the road hitting everybody in its path. Another complaint is battle mode. It's basically team-based now and no free-for-all. I've only played battle mode once and didn't like it that much.
Great fun, nice touch with the wheel! May 16, 2008 As always this game's aimed at casual gamers as well! For Starters the wheel is more of a novelty, great fun but you do so much better using the knunchuck and remote. This one has twice the amount of tracks of the N64 version but somehow this game doesn't have the longevity... I'm finding after a fair few mass gameing sheshs we're finding that people aren't reaching for the MarioKart quite so much any more.
Overall great game and a must have!
Mario-tastic genius!! May 15, 2008 Mariokart has long been a favourite title of mine. Admittedly, it went off the rails a couple of times...however, for the Wii, I've got to admit that this is one amazing title!!
Single player:
With so much to unlock, it can't be described as anything other than awesome! The graphics are first class - do you really care that much about frame rate etc? - everything moves swiftly and looks gorgeous! You find yourself totally immersed in fun and 150cc is so tough you can't help but go back for more and more! Shortcuts galore, infuriating weapons and gameplay make this the must have title for the Wii! The Wii wheel is a dream to use and the addition of bikes (and prams!!!) is a bonus. The bikes handle totally differently, and are a welcome change.
Multiplayer online.
Fantastic!! The best online modes available whether it's ghost time trials or 12 player mayhem (again astonishingly frustrating) - this really is worth owning a Wii for!!!
All in all, this is a classic. Sure, some of the retro tracks are a little cheap, however it's all fun and well worth every single penny!
Chances are that if you're reading this you're going to buy it anyway, so rest assured that you are going to lose the next 3 months of your life playing this game.
If you aren't connected to the internet, buy the wireless dongle. It makes this game EVEN BETTER!!
Well done to the writers, you've outdone yourselves. The future's here. The future's MARIOKART WII!
5-star multiplayer, 0-star single player May 14, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you're going to play with friends online, then this is an awesome game. But the single-player campaign is BROKEN. It's the least fair game I have ever played; you often get bombarded with power-ups and go from first to last, through no fault of your own, in sight of the finish line of the last race of a Grand Prix, and whoops! No trophy for you. Nintendo, what were you thinking?
Great fun! May 13, 2008 My son got this for his 9th birthday last week and I have had to prise him away most mornings before school and as soon as my husband comes home from work they are racing one another round numerous tracks, laughter ringing around the house.
Well worth the money - the wheel is useful but you can play without, in fact my daughter prefers using just the Wii remote.
The more you play, the more tracks and characters are unlocked. It's not just about winning the race, it's the fun aspect. I caught my children playing with a young boy from Japan yesterday - so even if you are on your lonesome you can choose an opponent from around the world.
I thoroughly recommend this game for all ages - buy it!
