3 out of 5 stars Battlefield Disasters?   August 7, 2008
The game promises much but delivers less. The single play option is repetitive and can get quite boring running from one end of the map to the other without any real story line to aid the game play. The online multiplay is better, as long as you don't end up on a server full of snobs who boot you off within five seconds for being a newbie!! The one thing that redeems the game is the customization of the gear you can get.

That said the graphics are good and the game play is somewhere between call of duty and Halo (with the vehicles!) I was in a dilemma about choosing between call of duty modern warfare abd BF2142 - something tells me I may have made a mistake!

3 out of 5 stars gaining, as I get to grips with the singleplayer part   August 5, 2008
The game at first had difficulty starting up. I went off in search of someone with broadband, downloaded a huge patch and installed it.
Then the game referred me to an EA server, in order to registrate me before I could play single-player. Odd ...oh well.
The server refused me access however, for some silly reason I don't care much about. Because my connection is too slow? I don't care, I play single-player.

I was not too pleased.

Developments: I gained access to the server and the BF site (faulty). What to do wasn't really obvious and I let it rest for several days. I had a brainstorm and Googled "registration battlefield 2142". In ten minutes or so everything was OK and I suddenly was inside the game, at last. Being shot at, wunderbar, and shooting back.

Graphics are so-so. I mean, of course settings are huge and detailed but the emphasis obviously is on multiplayer and action and I mean MULTI. Wartorn dreariness and the lack of a storyline is a bit tiresome in the long run when singleplaying. If you prefer lush landscapes I would suggest Quake Wars Enemy Territory and lovely colourful scenarios that for once really impressed me.

But I never really liked Battlefield 1942, partly because it already was too old by the time I got around to it. And there's the 1.50 patch to download some day. First Person Shooters these days certainly have some steep learning curves, all with squad formations and things. The singleplayer part is training mostly, preparing for the real game which is multiplayer. Several multiplayer maps aren't available for singleplayer which really annoys me. And 16 bots aren't too many on these big maps, forget any talk of strategy and connected frontline defenses. Real war? nah.

I much prefer Enemy Territory. Who knows, multiplayer might very well be different.

2 out of 5 stars Clunky, crashing waste of time   August 3, 2008
I returned this game after it crashed repeatedly - and the 1.5 patch did absolutely none of what it was supposed to. Also, the interface is unhelpful, the intructions are really poor and my relatively powerful Intel Mac struggled even to change between menu screens quickly - loading times are a nightmare. The fact that you reload your guns with a ludicrously casual slowness takes away from the realism somewhat, when you're under fire but putting new bullets in as if sitting on a comfy sofa with a Pez dispenser.

However, some of the action within the tiny, repetetive maps is quite cool. Buy it if you want all this sluggish, pompous EA obligatory account sign-up nonsense with a teaspoon of actual gameplay, I'm going elsewhere. Sadly, the Mac is badly served for 3D shooty fun.

5 out of 5 stars Great game married by very delayed UK release   April 23, 2008

A great FPS game that offers a little more depth than the likes of Call of Duty. Multiple soldier kits, team play and some well-designed maps make for a very immersive game.

My only concern is the time it has taken EA to release this game in the UK. I received an US import copy of the Mac version in December 2007. Why wasn't the game released in the UK at the same time?
