Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
Exploring 20 square miles of African savannah and jungle is never an easy task. But when you’re up against an army of highly trained mercenaries, the danger becomes unimaginable. Welcome to the world of Far Cry 2.
Far Cry 2 has some of the best explosions in the business
Vehicles are great for cover as well as transport
It’s best to keep some of the game’s factions on your side
The environmental graphics are both stunning and highly varied

It’s been over four years since the release of the first Far Cry, and Far Cry 2 has almost nothing in common with it beyond being a first-person shooter with excellent graphics and advanced artificial intelligence. It’s by a different developer, and you now play one of eight different mercenary characters out to catch an arms dealer nicknamed “The Jackal.”

The sci-fi enemies have also been jettisoned in favour of a much more realistic game where survival skills are just as important as a good aim. The rules of engagement--either by stealth or all guns blazing--are entirely up to you.

Key Features
  • Virtual safari: The game features 20 square miles of terrain for you to travel, filled with realistic fauna and flora and fully destructible trees and buildings.
  • Fiery realism: With an all-new graphics engine created just for the game, fire moves and propagates exactly as in real-life, with vegetation breaking and snapping realistically.
  • The coming storm: A dynamic weather system changes to reflect your mood, with the sky turning dark and stormy during bad times.
  • Jungle survival: Highly realistic weapons degrade with use, bullets need to be dug out of your body, and vehicles break down if pushed beyond their limits.
  • Buying friends: Meet and co-operate with fellow mercenaries as you pit different factions against one another in a war-torn African state.
About the Developer: Ubisoft Montreal
Ubisoft’s huge development studio in Canada has created many of the French publisher’s biggest hits, including the Splinter Cell,/i> series, the modern Prince of Persia games, Rainbow Six: Vegas, Assassin’s Creed, Naruto: Rise of a Ninja and the Far Cry sequels and spin-offs.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but no masterpiece.   November 30, 2008

Firstly, dont bother getting this game if you're after it for the multiplayer. While fun the weapons aren't balanced and it pales in comparison with certain other unspoken masterpieces :P

The single player campaign is where it truly shines. While the gameplay does feel repetetive sometimes it still maintains a healthy level of fun.
As for the scenery... This game is worth buying purely to take in the sights. It's literally breathtaking the first time you see the sun setting over a field full of casually grazing zebra.

And this is one of the first games i've bought in years that i haven't managed to complete within two days. That's a massive bonus in my opinion.
The gameplay is pretty great, the cars feel fun to drive(For the first few hours at least, and yes you will spend a lot of your time driving to and from objectives) Luckily the beauty of the environment around you will keep you distracted most of the time, I know this from experience after headfirst crashing into a checkpoint full of angry soldiers while staring at a burning field....Repeatedly.

One of my only complaints about this game is the weapons. While they are still great fun, it takes a few bullets too many to put people down, you shouldn't have to shoot someone 5 times in the chest with an AK-47 to kill them.

If you've ever played boiling point you'll know what to expect from this game, but with better scenery and less getting drunk.

If you're a fan of the fps and would like a bit of a change from the generic linearity of most games these days.
Buy this.

1 out of 5 stars Dissapointing   November 30, 2008
How dissapointing!!!Basically, you spend countless hours just running around trying to figure out what to do next without even engaging the enemy. Engaging the enemy is why I play FPS games to begin with not to explore continents. Then there is this horrendous map that covers 3/4 of your screen so it is almost like walking/running while half blindfolded. On top of that you get weapons that jam exclusively in the height of the battle. What was I to say to this new feature: wow?!?! How damn annoying!!! It is quite possibly the single most annoying thing I have ever seen. I spent 2/3 of my time doing something other than fighting the enemy. I desperately wanted to like this game as I liked the first one so much but this one brings in so many stupid things that were driving me nuts that I decided to call it a day. I sold it second hand so at least I got some of my money back.

1 out of 5 stars Has anyone completed this game?   November 26, 2008

I have invested over 25 hours in the game (83% completion) only for all three saves (60%, 73% and 83%) to 'suddenly' become corrupted and fail to load.

So I rate this game as 1 star, as it is completely pointless. How do you rate a game you cant ever finish?

Look on the web I am not the only one with this problem.

4 out of 5 stars First person heaven !   November 24, 2008
I thought long and hard as per usual before i bought this game and i wasn't dissappointed.basic's first.1.visually awsome.2.sounds great.3.if you like fps then you need this game.my only gripe is sometimes you have to walk a bit to much but dont worry there's always a vehicle around the next bend and sometimes it wont be driven by bad guys lol hope you enjoy it as much as i am.dont think i'm gonna ever get rid of this game its so good.oh and its absolutely huge so every now and then forget the mission and go looking for the wildlife.its there and its amazing but stupid lol

1 out of 5 stars Major bug. Avoid this.   November 24, 2008

Far Cry 2 isn't a bad game, though it gets very repetetive after a while. It's selling point is the freedom it gives the player to complete missions any way they choose. While this is a good idea, I get the impression that it doesn't matter which way you complete it. You can complete most missions just by running in with an AK47, making any planning beforehand seem like a waste of time. If you do decide to plan every detail before a mission then you may find this quite a rewarding game. The multiplayer is ok. The levels are a bit lame and you'll often be spawned right behind another enemy player making for an easy machete kill. The map creator will be great for those that have the patience for it but any community created maps are only playable in non ranked matches. Far Cry 2 looks quite nice thanks to decent graphics and it's huge environment. As with the gameplay though, after a while the environment will begin to get repetetive.

Normally i'd award this game a good 3 stars if not for a crippling bug that Ubisoft deny even exists. At some point when you try to load up your save the game will freeze. At this point there's no way to overcome this problem. When this happens all you can do is start a new game. Though this is likely to just happen again. Ubisoft have denied any problem with the game but the thousands of posts on the net confirms what i'm saying. Far Cry 2 is broken and until Ubisoft come up with a solution you'd be a fool to purchase this game.
