Not entirely accurate in my opinion. September 28, 2008 To polarise a needle to use as a compass, Do NOT wrap a wire round it and leave it connected for 5 MINUTES ....to a battery.. You can just touch the wires onto a battery for a couple of seconds to do the same job..and not waste a maybe essential battery.( you are shorting it out ) and that`s never a good idea..You can polarise a needle just by hitting it with a stone onto another stone..the molecules rearrange themselves with the Earths own magnetic field. Also, in the section dealing with electrocution, providing the victim has dry clothing, you can pull him/her clear without fear of a shock yourself.grab their coat or pullover or whatever..The book says wait for the current to be turned off or something similar.....There may not be time ! A great book without doubt, but as with all things in life, ..take nothing for granted, and double check everything..Do a bit of research. These comments are just my own opinion, you must form your own, I could be wrong !
Better then before July 3, 2007 I got the book when I was a kid, but my brother who was a scout master at the time borrowed it, and lost it!. But I got the updated version not so long ago and its better again. Its a fantastic book for a whatever level your on. A lot of detail and easy to follow instructions, Its really a first class book, So thank you Mr. wiseman.
Good book June 30, 2006 18 out of 19 found this review helpful
Not what you would call a pocket guide. This book is absolutly packed with very useful information. trouble is, there is so much info you will probably forget most of it before you get to use it. I would reccomend buying and reading this book then also buying the collins book on survival which is much, much smaller. The collins book can be taken anywhere and will remind you of what you John Wiseman taught you.
Never out of date. March 31, 2006 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
First read this book in my teens and still use it today for regular up - dates to my outdoor survival knowledge. I have reached the top of more mountains and swam more miles at sea than most whilst traversing long distance paths at will and believe me have genuinely found that the book has made my life easier on many occassion. This book could have been called ' Don't Panic ' which is the overiding message throughout and swimming just 100 yards from a beach in Wales, I was forced to think of Mr. Wiseman and this philosophy. You might not need to know about poisonous snakes in South America but you do need to know what to do if unfamiliar surroundings turn uncomfortable. You might not need a large knife and a tent always on your back but you do need coins even in this age of mobile phones. Read the book and live the philosophy. You do need it.

Does what it's supposed to. The perfect survival guide for any situation, tells you how to find food and water, make a shelter, make a fire and lots more. There are colour illutrations of edible and medical plants as well as poisonous plants and fungi. There is also a first aid section which covers a range of situations. The book also tells you how to make weapons (e.g. bow and arrow, spear, sling etc...) to hunt with and to recognise different animals tracks. It describes different knots (includes how to make snares and other animal traps). It also briefly tells you how to survive a tornado, earthquake, nuclear explosion etc.. If your looking for a book to help you in any climate in any country this is perfect, or if you just like the outdoors you will find this book usefull 10/10.
