Disappointing October 13, 2006 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was somewhat disappointed by this dictionary. Although it is comprehensive, almost all the illustrations are black and white and most are far too busy to be clear. There are a few colour plates but the choices seem a bit bizaar to say the least, unless you have a particular interest in deep sea fauna.
How can you live without t? February 19, 2004 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Whatever the reason, if you need to translate a french word into english or vice versa, this is the book for you. An extraordinary range of topics. How did I get by without my Duden!
What No Computer Section!? January 18, 2003 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
The Oxford-Duden Pictorial French & English Dictionary is up to the usual superb standard of all these publications, however the current (1996) edition has one astounding omission. There is no section for computers or the internet. As one of the main reasons for my purchase was for French computer vocabulary (the French do insist on inventing their own words, rather than using the American words like the rest of the world - good for them I say - 'logiciel' is much more elegant than 'software') so I feel a publication like the Duden Pictorial should by now have computer terminology included!
from the cosmos to the strip joint July 12, 2001 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
As a regular writer to french colleagues and friends I find this amazing book able to cover topics which are way beyond those is available in good dictionaries, robert, larousse etc. It even allows you to find words which you didn't know in you own language!!but which you may know what it is used for.Like the dangly ropes on my brother's yacht! or the tool granda uses on his allotment to dig out the dandelions. It is not encyclopaedic but it nearly is. pete reid
A fascinating resource for all French language users. February 4, 2001 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
I am so happy to have discovered this dictionary! It is as useful for learning the names of ordinary, everyday objects as it is for expanding your vocabulary into specialist technical areas. It is an essential resource for anyone who owns a holiday property in France or travels regularly. The index is easy to use and enables you to find an equivalent word in either French or English. The detailed line drawings are clear and well labelled. As a translator I use this dictionary regularly but have also recommended it to French language learners who have found it to be interesting and helpful.
