Crucial for A Level Français!! March 10, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is an absolute bible when it comes to A level french! As a 2nd year student I found the leap from AS to A Level quite dramatic, yet this book has helped me through it all. Not only does it widen your vocabulary, (a necessity for advanced french) but it also helps tremendously with exam practice as the written papers always ask you to answer the questions in your propre mots!! ...And it rates the words with levels of formality so you do not end up writing french slang in your final exams!Definitely an essential if you want to do your best!
Get a good A level grade without needing a good teacher! September 13, 2000 18 out of 19 found this review helpful
I thumbed this book to death during my two years of A level French. It's a great tool when trying to write essays and convince your teacher you're really working hard! Simply look up the English descriptive word you want to use (which makes your essay more eloquent) and this book will give you an equally impressive French term, plus any colloquial or standard words which you could also use in speech or less formal writing. After a while you begin to remember these lists so when trying to translate something from English into French you suddenly have a choice of words to use, wow! Well it was a breakthrough for me anyway... Do consider this book if your GCSE course only provided you with parrot phrases for coping with a French exchange and you're feeling ill-equipped to deal with the A level. It worked for me, I got an A despite a French teacher who refused to converse with us in French, she would only give us one word translations (and then most of the time we were told to look it up ourselves...) Bonne chance!
