Turkish: Learn Before You Land CD October 8, 2002 18 out of 18 found this review helpful
Maybe I'm not being fair to this CD. I didnt use it on a plane (a bit anti-social.)I use in my car on the journey to work and I found it quite useful although there were things that made me want to frisby it -the patronising woman for a start... if she shut up a bit we could learn more Turkish. I don't need to be told that 'we are going to spend a little time with various words to do with one of lifes great joys, eating...' (or something along those lines!) I can re-run the CD myself - they were cheating really to repeat great chunks of words. Maybe my lifestyle is just not one aimed at here but I have NEVER required a gym in a Turkish hotel. And how can we learn to ask for pork in a Muslim country but not be given the words for mutton or lamb? Or Mosque? Or antiquities/archeolology? The bit about making friends is good and like the last reviewer I enjoyed hearing the words off the written page. I think its OK to buy it, (I did!) but not as a stand alone learning tool.
Why didn't anybody think of this before? May 29, 2002 22 out of 22 found this review helpful
As soon as we reached cruising altitude, I plugged myself into this CD and sat back. It was a 4 hour flight and at the end of it I was confident enough to try out my new-found language on the locals. Although it's not possible to hold a long conversation in Turkish, it contains enough useful phrases to give me enough phrases to be able to get a taxi, ask directions, book into a hotel, eat at a restaurant etc without having to resort to "pigeon English"! It also teaches you how to greet people, but I found that once you start talking in Turkish the people seem to think that you are fluent!I'm not quite sure what the other people on the plane thought of me, as it's very difficult to repeat the phrases and not look completely mad to your fellow passengers! I have tried to learn Turkish through phrasebooks, but unless you are actually listening to somebody pronouncing the words, it's a very difficult language to pick up from books. A definite must for anybody going to Turkey for any reason, and also a perfect excuse for going to Turkey!
