I am an A2 student follwoing the Advancing Physics course. Sadly, this A2 coursebook is an absolute shambles, just like the AS book. Co-authored by 30 different people it is patchy and inconsistant. Whilst some sections are passable others are just confusing. All the chapters are filled with waffle and contradictory passages - often 50% of the material could be cut out, with no content lost. There are plenty of attempts at explaining different, related topics but they are always woefully incomplete
As a coursebook, this is not even worth looking at. You would be far better off investing in a proper textbook like "Advanced Physics" to suppliment your learning. I have struggled through two years of these Advancing Physics books and it ain't pretty! Often, the facts are lost behind vague sentances and there is a general lack of focus and delivery.
Avoid at all costs.

This book is intended as one of a number of resources to support the advancing physics course. It does not contain all the answers but does give an overview of the course and set it into context. Many of my students found it useful, particularly for revision where it does a good job of setting everything into context. The central content for the course is highlighted in boxes and the try these and end of chapter questions are useful, although yes some answers are wrong (show me any first edition of a physics book where that is not the case. It needs to be used with the CD that also accompanies the course and a good teacher. Only consider as a student if you are doing OCR B Advancing Physics the material is too different to many other courses.

I used this book for my A-levels and I DIDN'T fail! I got a B.
though there are mistakes usually in the questions, there are quite few and the questions themselves stimulated understanding.
The book is usually clear and showed how to derive expressions and stimulated further research.
It was also far more useful than a revision guide to revise from and I wish I had it here at University (I'm studying physics) as it is in some ways clearer for the basics than my university text.

This book is the only book on the market that specifically caters for the OCR B (advancing physics) specification. Throughout the book good intentions to make physics seem exciting and imaginative are displayed. Unfortunately this comes at the cost of clarity and usability. Information that will and will not be examined is not clearly separated and topics are disscussed in a narative style that makes finding key facts hard. Some attempt has been made to highlight key facts in boxes, however these are rarely clear or self explanatory. Much reference throughout is made to the CD in the same series, however the CD is difficult to navigate and the student version does not provide any answers to questions. The book does contain some questions and end of topic revison but only numerical answers are provided and many of these are incorrect! It is definitely worth downloading the correction sheet from the website as some of the equations and units quoted in the book are also misprints. The book is not particulary useful as a revision aid as more difficult topics are skirted around while much time is spent on presenting topics in a historical and ethical setting. Ideas tend to flow into each other not always following a logical order. No attempt has been made to cross reference to other topics in the book. The index is brief and the contents list does not provide adequate information on chapters. In conclusion this book is not aimed at A level science students but at the interested layman. I would not recommend buying it even if you are taking the course. Advanced Physics For You covers most of the topics and those not covered can be supplemented with other textbooks.

While the book claims to be following the OCR B syllabus, the content is only vaguely related to the course. The majority of its pages are dedicated to pointless waffle, while key concepts are skimmed over.Most of the answers to the practice questions are wrong, and if by sheer luck you happen to come across one that is correct, it is routinely rounded to a maximum of one significant figure. Do not buy this book unless you actually WANT to fail your A-level exam.
