4 out of 5 stars Very few characters!   April 28, 2006

First off, let me just say that I haven't worked through this book, I'm just a post-grad Mandarin student who looked through this book in the local bookshop. It looks really great in terms of what it covers, but I just wanted to let those who can't pre-view it before buying here, that the majority of the course is in romanisation and the only time you meet characters is in a general interest sort of way. If you're in China, you will need to be able to read really, even if you can't write, so if you want the language for anything beyond pure conversation, this course will let you down on that side of things. Other than that, it looks great, with loads of audio and will no doubt be of enormous help. Recommended, but get some script support as well.
