3 out of 5 stars For absolute completists only   June 14, 2004

I bought this book recently on the grounds that JM Coetzee spoke great praise of Flaubert in his book Youth. I was told to read Madame Bovary, which I bought aswell, but I got this on the strength that the description sounded like it would be of similar standards and topics as Coetzee's Youth. I was, however, not entirely accurate on that assumption. I admire the amount of care that Hesperus Press has put into producing this series of books in such a marvelous way, with beautiful covers, high quality paper and excellent introductions and notes. There are, needless to say, a lot of excellent books in this series. I just dont think this is one of them, and it almost made me think that the whole series of books was just for completists, which is completely opposite of the truth, because there are many excellent books in it, as I've already said.

Memoirs of a Madman deals with a 17 year old Flaubert's confusion as he falls in love with a woman he sees at the beach, and how the thoughts of her take over from the deep thinking he had always done during his whole life previously. Sounds interesting, you say? It definitely would be if he werent spending the duration of the book writing paragraphs and paragraphs based on the same feelings. We have to remember that this book was written for a friend, and most likely made much more sense to the friend who actually knew him personally. We, however, do not.

If you are writing a thesis on Flaubert, I would say this is essential reading, but if you're looking for a good story or a good piece of literature, you'll find many better places. It's almost impossible to believe that this is the same person who wrote Madame Bovary, one of the top-10 pieces of literature ever written.
