Great insight into the winemakers of Cahors October 29, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got this book as a gift and it really introduced me to the wines from Cahors. It's not just the wine, what's more compelling is the story around the lives of the Cahors winemakers who feature in the book.
Hot summers, devasting rain at harvest, whatever is thrown at them the real people of Cahors show remarkable courage and fortitude in dealing with it.
Great human story and also one for the wine lover.
Not a vintage read. September 13, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you enjoyed "From here you can't see Paris", as I did, you might be expecting more of the same. Well, it is and it isn't. Although written in similar vein, I found the book difficult to read as it is hops about from one year to another and from one wine-maker to another. There are good reasons for this, as the author explains but the book was just too disjointed for me. The previous book, "Paris", was stuffed full of lovely imagery of France and food and restaurant life. The stories really flowed I felt I got to know the people involved. This book doesn't quite do the same; lots of facts about winemaking though. I found myself flipping through pages and didn't have that yearning to go and visit the place as I did with "Paris". Educational but not so enjoyable.
