I've just recommended a good friend to buy this - it is one of those short stories that is potentially life changing if the deeper implications are understood. It is my #1 short story. What would the world look like if everyone practiced the principle in the story? The insights into the human condition still ring true today, as they do in Tolstoy's 'War & Peace', which is still my favourite novel.

This is one of the stories of Tolstoy which mark his change from a worldly novelist (War and Peace, Anna Karenina) to a prophet of the future for Russia and the world in general. It tells a tale of snowbound self-sacrifice, of a selfish man becoming, in a night, a selfless one. It is hard to overrate the sheer power of this tale.
