1 out of 5 stars Too many sound effects   October 31, 1999

This is a terrible version of one of the best novels ever written. One has always expected top quality from the BBC, but I'm afraid they are slipping. On these tapes there is background music playing more than half the time.During ball scenes there is backgorund chatter and music, to make you hear that a ball is going on.Thank you, but I have an imagination to conjure up a ball scene. The same goes for battle scenes: the constant sound of gunfire.Just a bit of background noise would do to set the scene. You hear doors open and shut, footsteps walk across a room, for "atmoshpere."This great story is marred in the telling by too much unnecessary sound effects...
