Amazon.co.uk Review Polycystic ovary syndrome can cause weight gain, excessive body hair, acne, breast pain, depression and mood swings yet because the symptoms are so similar to those of PMS the condition is often left undiagnosed until it is too late.Colette Harris--a health journalist who herself suffers from the condition--and Dr Adam Carey discuss the symptoms, the impact PCOS can have on sufferers' health, relationships and self esteem, and offer advice on practical ways to deal with the symptoms in a practical, down-to earth way. This book will doubtless bring relief to women who have lived with the effects and who are looking for ways to ease them. An easy to follow "4 Point Plan to Wellness", and an A-Z of symptoms and how to deal with them using traditional and complementary health care, help point the reader in the right direction, and comfort and support is provided in the form of inspirational real-life stories that prove that there is a way of living life to the full. What this book probably does best is bring the subject of PCOS very much to the fore, lending support to anyone who has either been diagnosed or fears that they may have problems. Infertility and diabetes are just two of the major problems that undiagnosed or untreated PCOS can cause, and as one in ten women suffer from the condition it seems only right that someone should speak out. Harris and Carey do their jobs well in a sound and accessible book that has been a long time coming.--Susan Harrison

Good simple chapters December 19, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This book feels like it is talking to you. The advantage of a book written by Colette Harris, is she actually has PCOS.
I bought, along with a lot of others, this book when I was first diagnosed with PCOS. It is very easy to read and it was the one I started with. A useful set of 12 chapters that cover what PCOS is, how our body works and your lifestyle (among others). I can't say this book will change your life but it will help you get an understanding of the professional information available elsewhere. It is not a substitution for a diagnosis but will help you understand what is going on with your body.
The time I found this book most helpful, although I do dip into it every now and then, is when I was first diagnosed.
Thank God someone somewhere knows what they are talking abou October 1, 2003 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
Only 5 months ago at an age of 39 was I diagnosed as having PCOS(had to go privately to find out what was wrong with me!) and went through the ovarian drilling procedure etc. After miscarrying once again a few weeks ago I bought this book along with the PCOS Diet book to read whilst recovering. It gave me more information regarding this condition than I could find surfing the internet or that the specialist could give me. I am going to follow a healthy diet and try again in a few months. Reading both the books gave me an increased desire to carry on trying and helped me come to terms with what and why certain things have happened in my life to date (inability to loose weight, frequent miscarriage etc). My only criticism is that it is a shame that I felt I had to buy both books to get a complete picture and would have liked one publication to cover both aspects. Also I would have liked more information on Metformin, which seems to be prescribed as the 'norm' by the medical profession (which may not have been the case when this book was first written). Overall an excellent and informative find.
Vital reading for suffers of pcos July 8, 2003 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Excellent book giving both easy to understand information and practical advise.Made me feel like i was not alone with this condition and that it is treatable to some degree.Worth the read in conjunction with the diet book.
Important starting point and reference guide April 23, 2003 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Really useful - especially when read in conjunction with the diet book. Strikes a good balance between 'conventional' and 'self-help' type treatments. However, just beginning to get a little bit out of date & is quite negative about Metformin (which I have found invaluable). Anyway, very readable and informative - particularly when first diagnosed.

Having read the book, and having a partner with the syndrome, I have to say that Colette's book honestly did change both mine and my partner's lives.. Colette went a long time with worrying symptoms GPs couldn't identify. And when she found out that she had PCOS she found that there was next to no information for a non-scientific audience. The very reasons she set about writing her book was because her journey to health was a very personal one, because there was precious little information out there for the general reader and - crucially - she didn't want to just take the drugs that the doctors blithely prescribed. Over the last five or six years Colette has absolutely revolutionised the way PCOS is considered in this country. She has worked tirelessly to make magazines and newspapers write about the subject and she wrote her book primarily in the hope of generating a debate and providing women with PCOS the opportunity to see that they could be well again and that well-ness wasn't just about taking drugs, but about taking control..Having been at the sharp end of this syndrome I can tell you from experience that the contents of this book changed my life, and I've met many other people at the Verity self help group, to which Colette gives her time and energy, whose lives have also been changed. In fact women who were told they were infertile by doctors who now have children after adopting Colette's principles. At the end of the day Colette had never written a book before this. She wrote it because she saw there was a massive lack of information.
