Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very good first reader   February 17, 2006

This consists of a series of related stories about the same characters. It is geared towards children and uses only the present tense. It is very simple so is excellent for anyone just starting French. I wanted something to help revise my French having not used it for many years and wanting only reading skills so I rattled through it at a great rate. There was nothing there to puzzle me. If you want to build up confidence then it is a fine choice but it will be too simple for anyone who has a reasonable grasp of French.

5 out of 5 stars BEGINNER IS PROGRESSING WELL, THANKS TO THIS BOOK!   May 11, 2003

I bought this book in the hope that it would be simple enough for ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS in the form of myself and my husband, and yet fun enough to hold the interest of our two children (aged 10 and 11) who are both learning French at school. Fortunately, it does both, and more besides.

The short 'stories' are illustrated with pen and ink sketches, and they help guide you if you are very unsure, and the stories and sketches are also quite entertaining.

At the end of each short story are a few questions in French, plus an activity to complete - such as drawing and describing some of the things you have read about. This helps reinforce what you have learnt.

At the end of the book is a useful short dictionary of the words and phrases used in the book, which can be really helpful if you get stuck.

One of the best things about the book is that it introduces key words and phrases and then repeats them so that they sink in, but it does it in such a way that it does not become repetitive or boring.

We are making great progress in French in just two weeks, and this book has even encouraged us to pick up a copy of 'Le Monde' the French newspaper to see how many words we can recognise ... and fortunately we can report "Quite a few!"

An excellent buy for beginners of all ages!
