4 out of 5 stars Brilliant   July 30, 2005

The main pity about this book is that it has none of the original OF text in it. However it's a good, faithful translation of the original, in flowing prose that gives a fascinating and invaluable insight into the mindset of the times as well as some delightful old traditions and folklore. For anyone who wants to know the original sources for the period but hasn't got time to spend learning the original language or money to spend on the hard-to-obtain original texts, this is very good value for money.

5 out of 5 stars Long overdue   December 31, 2004

An excellent new translation of this important work, and at a very reasonable price as well.

I have the original hardcover version of this book which has the translation on the facing page to the original text - it cost me 80 - so this paperback version is a very useful and welcome addition for quick reference. However, unlike the original hardcover version you only get the translation and footnotes, but you also get an extra paper on Wace by Elizabeth van Houts - so you win some and you loose some - but at this price you can't really go wrong.

Highly Recommended
