5 out of 5 stars Pause for thought   August 31, 2004
This little book is a wonderful collection of poems, epigrams and jottings from the late 19th Century and early 20th century. The female contributors have chosen carefully pieces which obviously meant something to them personally such as 'Books', 'Our Life's Task or 'True Nobility'. All are hand written, in 'best writing'(one in illimuinated manuscript), and some beautifully illustrated by the writers too.

The range of verse includes those which make you smile such as one about 'sausages' to very moving and heartfelt verses as exemplified by 'Beatitudes for friends of the aged'. Whilst on first reading they obviously herald from a more gentille age the issues chosen are just as current today as in century's ago. As a Godmother myself, who collects favourite poems, sayings etc, I intend to make a present of copies of this book to my Godchildren with an addition from me, handwritten at the back. I'd like to think that the book will get passed on with additions from future generations!
