Amazon.co.uk Review "What did you do with the rabbit?" Not a surefire line to seduce a woman perhaps but when Dig Ryan bumps into his first love after a 12-year gap he just can't help himself. Instead of winning her back with his wit and whispered sweet nothings, Dig finds himself faced with an affliction he didn't know he had--he says completely the wrong thing at completely the wrong time. Often. But his ex, the delicious Delilah, seems as keen as he is and it looks like Dig is about to put the something into his thirty-nothing life. So where does that leave Nadine--Dig's best friend since school? Instead of being thrilled that Dig is settling down, the reunion unlocks her insecurities and she regresses into the "big ginger gooseberry" she was as a teenager. She realises--just when it's too late--that she's in love with him, that she's always been in love with him. And, to make matters worse, she thinks she just might feel better if she gets back in touch with her ex (who Dig reckons is the Antichrist). The result is irresistible; an immensely enjoyable read that will guzzle up the hours and more than delight. Thirty-nothing is Lisa Jewell's second novel, hot on the heels of Ralph's Party, which sold more than 200,000 copies and was the UK's top-selling debut novel of 1999. Lisa, who is currently writing her third novel, has also contributed a short story to the War Child anthology Girl's Night In, alongside Amy Jenkins, Marian Keyes and Freya North. Her Web site (www.lisa-jewell.co.uk) has a great guide to writing and getting published, plus a quirky list of Lisa's favourite novels and further information about her work. --Jane Honey

Delilah I can promise you that by the time we are through the world will never ever be the same. And your to blame! March 23, 2008 Digby (Dig) Ryan wakes up on the morning of his thirtieth birthday with a killer hangover and a nubile 17 year old in his bed. But that's the least of his worries when he realised just how little he's done in his thirty-nothing years. Yes he's got a great job as A&R rep for an obscure little record label that's only had one resounding success so far and he's got his immaculately - almost obsessively- clean and tiny flat and his own car... oh and of course his best mate Nadine whom he's known since his first day at secondary school 12 years ago. But what wonders Dig, has he actually done with his life...why is he still sleeping with 17 year olds when all his friends are married with mortgages and kids? Why can't he find the woman he wants to spend the rest of his life with?
Nadine Kite is Digs best mate, she's also thirty and owns her own flat and quirky furniture from the local charity shops and skips. She's got an ultra-successful career as a photographer with her own portfolio and studio - but there's one thing she hasn't got. A long term relationship with the man of her dreams.
So over a bacon butty and steaming coffee the two mates make a pact: whoever is the first to settle down with a boy/girl that their best mate approves of wins the bet and 100. It's a silly little pact and neither expect the other to win....until into their lives strolls Delilah Lillie and turns their world upside down.
Delilah Lillie was Digs first girlfriend, the childhood sweetheart who broke his heart when she suddenly just left him 12 years ago and broke Nadine's heart when she stole her best friend. Dig is delighted by the reappearence of his first love and Nadine is horrified to see her nemsis -especially as she's just realised that she's in love with Dig. What will happen when Delilah re-enters their cosy little lives - is it really true that two's company and three's a crowd? And if so which one of them will have to give way? And more to the point why is Delilah, who is now stinking rich and married back in London anyway? What secret is she hiding and what does she want with Dig? Will Dig allow Delilah back into his life and his heart and break Nadine's all over again, or will he realise that the woman of his dreams has been under his nose all along? And how will Dig feel when Nadine looks up her first love and lets him back into her life? Will life for the two ever be the same again or has Delilah's reappearance caused irreparable damage?
This is a well written book about the lives of two people, and what can happen when your past suddenly comes back to haunt you. A great story about friendship, love, and secrets that can either make or break a person forever. A definite must-read if you like romances with a twist. The first Lisa Jewell book I've read and I'll deffo be on the look-out for more.
Predictable but enjoyable September 4, 2006 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you are looking for an easy enjoyable read on the beach, then this will do. But don't expect much more. I bought this book having read 'A Friend of the Family', which I loved. However I don't think 'Thirtynothing' is as good - its very predictable (I knew what would happen from two chapters in) which is its main downfall - there are few surprises. Saying that I did enjoy it, its a 'feel-good' book. I would still buy other Lisa Jewell books, if I wanted something easy to read and not too taxing!
Brilliant read July 17, 2006 this is the 2nd of Lisa Jewell's books that I have read - and this one was equally as good as the first - totally different story!
This would be a great holiday read - but you would probably miss out on everything going on around you as you will be totally engrossed in the book!! hehe!!
I would highly recommend this book to all
Helped me to realise things in life January 16, 2006 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
perhaps it was predictable but, on my summer holidays i do not want a complicated read, i want something that i can pick up when i have a spare second. But it gave me more it may have been predictable but somethings are to outsiders it just reminded me that although this may be the case it may also be the hardest thing to see if you are one of those people. It turned my world upside down but also made me realise that the people i love are right here next to me, for that i will always be thanxful to this book for, cleshe but it can be the most simplist things in life that make you think and this boom rang true thats what i love in a good book, one i can actually realate to! xxx
Great but slightly predictable July 25, 2005 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I really enjoyed reading this book, the characters were great and the storyline had quite a few twists and turns, many being totally unpredicted. But after reading Ralph's Party, her first book, the ending to Thirtynothing became slightly predictable towrds the middle and end of the book. Although it was great reading about what happened to Dig and Nadine in the end, the same happened in Ralph's Party with Ralph and Jem (two main characters ending up together in the end, happily ever after) and it could have been made 'better' with a twist at the end or something not so 'predictable'. I'm still looking forward to reading Lisa Jewells other books as she is a great author who writes a great book.
