5 out of 5 stars I have had this book for less than a week but everyone I know has now heard about it...   January 10, 2008

Brilliant read. It has been the basis of many discussions in several of my classes this week. I am a science teacher and I have been making a point of describing to my classes how lucky they are to have a school. I for one will be raising funds through various sources for this fantastic cause.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and inspirational   January 7, 2008

Whilst I struggled with the style in the early pages of this book it quickly became very compelling. It gives an extraordinary insight into the northern areas of Pakistan - not just the politics but how the community functions, the role of religion and what is needed. This is a particularly interesting perspective given how region and its issues are currently being covered in the press. The story of Greg Mortenson and what he went through to build schools in Northern Pakistant and later in Afganistan is truely inspirational.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational Reading at its best   November 12, 2007

As the cover states, this book charts "One Man's Mission to Promote Peace... One School at a Time" and tells the real-life tale of Greg Mortenson, a talented climber who, facing failure, is able to utilise the dogged determination of his climbing to turn that failure into his life's work. But don't be deceived, this is not a fairytale with a happy ending, Greg Mortenson is candid about the journey he has chosen, the mistakes that are made, the low points and the threat of failure. What makes his story truly remarkable is how he deals with the setbacks that life throws upon him and how, with a little bit of luck thrown in "one ordinary person, with the right combination of character and determination, really can change the world." Read it, enjoy it and be inspired!

5 out of 5 stars To inspire and educate you...   October 28, 2007

If you are looking for a book to educate and inspire you - this is the book. It is extremely timely to understand the region, religion and rulers of Pakistan and how education not war will stop the battles. This book should be required reading for all to show what one person and a strong will can accomplish. The book shows how one individual can make an impact on a remote region of the world.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant book - totally inspiring   October 28, 2007

A previous reviewer said they wanted to buy a copy for everyone they know, I felt totally the same way and have ordered 15 copies for Christmas presents. It really is that good. This account of one man's mission to build schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan is not only a fascinating story about the work he is doing but also an interesting insight into what life is like for people living in these two countries which, though they feature so often on the news, seem far away from our own lives. Thanks for a great book.
