Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars best available introduction   May 26, 2008
Having read Gary Cox's "Sartre Dictionary" I was interested to look at his other work on the philosopher. I found this to be as good, with the same clarity of presentation. Unlike a previous reviewer, I would say that this is THE introduction anyone should get before embarking on a reading of Sartre's writings. Cox is great at elucidating core themes and the book is organized in a way that ensures the reader is carefully guided through the main issues that dominated Sartre's thought (Consciousness; Freedom; Bad Faith; Authenticity). I don't believe a better guide is available.

5 out of 5 stars an excellent book   May 26, 2008
this is a fantastic book and well worth buying if you want to know what existentialism is all about. it is an in-depth study of sartre's philosophy AND gives an excellent overview of existentialism. it is well structured - introducting key terms, explaining them and then building on them until you really begin to understand what this branch of philosophy is all about.
as a reader, start slowly at the beginning and you will be led gradually into what appears from the outside to be the complicated world of existentialism. by the end it had given me the confidence to explain some of the terms simply to other people.
if you want to know more about this interesting, life enhancing branch of philosophy or if you are studying sartre at college or university and want a book that explains it all in a voice that is clear and knowledgable then this is the book for you.

3 out of 5 stars Not for the Perplexed   April 12, 2008

While this book is great for those already familier with Sartre's work or studying Sartre in depth, I found some topics were presented in a manner more complex than necessary, in fact, at times, I found it easier to read Sartre's own work. Good in depth discussion but not so useful as a introduction.

4 out of 5 stars A well structured guide to Sartre's philosophy   June 24, 2006

I found this a very clear and well structured guide to Sartre's philosophy. I really liked the way the key themes are dealt with individually but are shown to be part of an integrated whole. A book full of interesting analysis and constructive criticism of Sartre's ideas. A stimulating read that has really helped me get to grips with existentialism. The section on bad faith is particularly good.
