3 out of 5 stars Good for fluency, hard for grown-ups!   September 1, 2006

I bought this CD/book when my daughter was 3. I kept the CD in the car and within 4 or 5 playings was astounded to hear a little voice singing along in the back seat! The words weren't completely articulated as she couldn't understand them, but all the sounds were there. I was so proud...

The songs leave a lot to be desired from an adult point of view - but my daughter loves them, especially Le Chat Angora, Rock n'Roll Frere Jacques and Comment Ca-va?

Another reviewer thought the level of French was hard for a 3-6 year old, which I agree with, but I would also say that this CD can grow with your child, from the gaining a grasp of the way French sounds, to detailed understanding a few years later (if you can bear to listen to them for that long!).

The book is a bit strange as the piano accompaniment is printed, with all the French words, and a translation into English at the back. This is completely useless for my now-4-year-old, but I guess she will read it when older.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as it could have been   May 22, 2006

I bought this for my 2 year old twins as I want them to become familiar with listening to another language. One of them has already picked up C'est L'Halloween which is not bad considering this is aimed at older children.

Other than Frere Jacque, Ma mere m'envoie t-au marche and Je suis un artiste, I find most of the tunes uninspiring and dull. I can speak a little French and I find it difficult to comprehend what is actually being sung.

I will keep playing it to my boys as background music but overall, I am unimpressed and will be looking for a better product with memorable, fun tunes and lyrics.

i bought this along with an usbornes-learn-french dvd for our 3yr olds b'day as i wanted her to become familiar with french and pick up well known songs, in the way i learnt and still remember frere jacque, and sur le pont d'avignon. unfortunately she's not been keen on it, she's listened a few times but has picked up frere jacque from the usborne dvd's intro, i barely recognised the version on this cd. i did catch her colouring in the pictures in the accompanying book though. maybe she will appreciate it more when she is older?

Other than the first track, a Rock and Roll version of Frere Jacques which is brilliant, the songs are pretty dull and clearly unsuitable for the 3-6 year old audience the book claims to target. The language is too difficult for this age group and my classes were not impressed at all. The book has the lyrics, music and chords so children can play the music and the CD is sung by children (always more appealing than adults).
There are plenty of other more suitable cds/books for this age group on the market.
