4 out of 5 stars Learn French in Your Car   July 4, 2006

I drive about an hour each day and wanted something that I could use in the car. Unlike the previous reviewer, I find the sound is absolutely fine. There is an option to have French played on one speaker and English on the other but I reckon it is best on normal stereo. I liked the CD so much, I bought the 2nd and 3rd series. These are not quite as good as the speaker hesitates before saying whether polite or familiar forms are to be used. Also, all are slightly "American" in terms of English phraseology but not too bad. It is a very good way to learn good diction and vocabulary but you really need other material, eg writing and speaking to learn properly. Overall recommended as a very good product to supplement other learning material if you can use in your car.

2 out of 5 stars Not for people who don't already know French   January 3, 2006

These CDs are alright to REVISE your french. But if you have never learnt French this is the worst learning tool ever.
The sound quality sucks. It is in mono format (I think) because you can hear the English on one speaker & then the French on another. So I had to strain to hear the French in my car since it played on the speaker of the farther side. Ridiculous!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent learning tool   August 21, 2005

After arriving back from france for the second time I decided that it really was about time i learnt to speak French and after about an hour looking at what was available I decided to buy this CD set. I tried listening to these CDs whilst driving and found it far too distracting! Instead, I've been listening to them at home whilst reading the accompanying booklet and already have noticed my french (and confidence with the language) improving significantly. I've found it much easier to learn the correct pronociation of words by listening to someone speaking French rather than just reading through old school books etc. The way in which the CDs introduce new words and phrases is fantastic since only one new word is ever introduced at a time and each lesson builds upon vocabulary taught in previous lessons/chapters. I've found it necessary to constantly refer to the booklet (as opposed to solely listening to the CDs) since it clarifies a lot of the grammatical rules and 'nitty gritty' details such as word contractions and the context in which you can use certain word/phrases etc. In short, I highly recommend this CD set and consider it an absolute bargin at the price!

4 out of 5 stars It works without you knowing it!   November 14, 2003

I do a lot of driving with my work and spend up to 3 hours on the road every week day. Although I do get by listening to music I felt that I could better utilise my time and decided to have a go at learning a language and chose this course.
The thing I like about this the most is that it sinks in without you knowing it. You're driving along and not really concentrating on the CD which, in my opinion, makes the learning easier. I do an hour a day with this and am flying through the course and learning very quickly. I would recommend it to anyone who spends a lot of time in the car.
