5 out of 5 stars How trashy does the description of this thing sound?   September 29, 2008
I heard about this lamp and dismissed it as a trashy cheap sounding toy, but I was in Dublin recently and saw one in operation in a philips shop. It was actually kind of nice and because you can turn down the intensity of the colours a lot, it really manages to create a lot of different moods.

When I got it back home it was even better, in the evenings, in our white painted apartment, it could totally transform the look of the place. Light blues, deep greens, or hellish deep red, whatever the colour or intensity you want with the remote it only takes seconds to get it.

The lamp is nice and heavy, although a little top heavy, and the guy in the shop told me there was a stand for it but there was nothing in the box. The design is very Apple, and the remote is gorgeous even on it's own, with the glossy white finish and round spectrum to play with. It's also not infra-red, so you don't need line of sight with it.

I thought the price was pretty high, but now I'm starting to convince myself that one or two more wouldn't be such a bad purchase. Very recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Great for plain rooms!   September 1, 2008

I bought this product whilst in university halls of residence, which weren't the nicest rooms I've ever stayed in! The Philips living colours light transformed my room into a colourful and relaxing place.

The one problem is that it's so simple it can't really do anything, you can choose your colour, intensity and brightness (which can create some amazing effects) or you can choose to have it run through all the colours with a handy 'demo' mode (found by holding the on switch for a few seconds) but this is set at one brightness (the brightest - not good for going to sleep to!)

Overall, a great product! Would definitely buy one again!

4 out of 5 stars great outside   June 27, 2008
I know it's not exactly what it's made for, but when I'm outside of an evening, I always take this out and put it on the table pointing up at the parasol.
It somehow makes the ambience so much nicer having a warm glow, or just on the rotating colours if I have music on.
So much better than normal boring lighting

I like innovative light designs but this was a great disappointment and, if I was more organised, I would have returned the light to Amazon. While it does provide a full range of colours the light is simply too faint when the full noticeable colour intensity is set. You can make the light brighter but you lose the colour. If you want mood lighting from this buy several. At 100+ the light is not an economic or practical solution.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but you'll need more than one to use them as the only lights.   April 27, 2008

I've always liked the impact of coloured lighting in a room. Having read some of the other reviews, I knew it was not going to be that bright, so I purchased two of these for my living room that has near white walls. I found the colours great, but with only two of these in the corners of the room, you would need another light on to have a useable level of brightness for reading etc. I know Philips probably didn't expect people to use them as the only room light, but I though this might be a lazy way to put in remote control lighting.
So in order to test my theory you needed more, (and much to my wife's dismay), I brought two more. I have them in a 12ft by 18ft room, and the light levels just right. (Although these are no match for a normal light).
One thing I noticed is the remote control does sometimes fail to activate all the lights, but this seems a range thing. (I guess it could be interference with wifi which has been mentioned, but its not happened enough to be an issue.
In terms of setting up all lights to the same remote? easy, worked straight away. (Although I now have three extra remotes sat around doing nothing, as you can't re-tune the remotes to the save as each other)
Over all very pleased with them, the ability to lighten the colours is great, as you can use them normally, and make the colours more intense when your entertaining. Now if only I can work out how to link them to my computer and control them via music........

p.s. like many others, I couldn't give them a five start rating, because of the high price point.
