Amazon.co.uk Review
Hoo-ah! After seven Oscar nominations for his outstanding work in films such as The Godfather, Serpico and Dog Day Afternoon, it's ironic that Al Pacino finally won the Oscar for his grandstanding lead performance in this 1992 crowd pleaser. As the blind, blunt, and ultimately benevolent retired Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade, Pacino is both hammy and compelling, simultaneously subtle and grandly over-the-top when defending his new assistant and prep school student Charlie (Chris O'Donnell) at a disciplinary hearing. While the subplot involving Charlie's prep-school crisis plays like a sequel to Dead Poets Society, Pacino's adventurous escapades in New York City provide comic relief, rich character development, and a memorable supporting role for Gabrielle Anwar as the young woman who accepts the colonel's invitation to dance the tango. Scent of a Woman is a remake of the 1972 Italian film Profumo di donna. In addition to Pacino's award, Scent of Woman garnered Oscar nominations for director Martin Brest and for screenwriter Bo Goldman. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars AL PACINO'S GREATEST PERFORMANCE   July 13, 2008
and that says a lot after SCARFACE. But I have never seen anyone play a blind man as well as Pacino. The empty stare, most actors can't do it. Although a remake (the original is an Italian made film) this is a GREAT drama and fully deserves the Oscars it got! Actually worth 6 stars!

4 out of 5 stars A touching, heart-felt film   March 4, 2008

I watched this film and I have to admit, it was a bit slow-moving to begin with but once Pacino and O'Donnell set off on their life-altering trip together the pace really picks up.
I have never been so moved by an actor's performance, like the way Pacino moved me. His performance was truly touching and deserving of an Oscar.
This film is unquestionably a triumph to Pacino and his indescribable talent. He will draw you in, grab your heart and won't let go til the film is over and you are left feeling emotionally satisfied and happy with the world.
A beautiful and moving film, one not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars A blind man can drive!!!   January 17, 2007

Excellent film.
Al Pacino is a fantastic actor. He studied his character for a long time.
It's a funny, yet touching programme where a young college student meets an older, wiser, strict (yet blind) man, via a job on the school board.
The boy was supposed to look after him during thanks giving, at first he didn't want to, but he needed the money, so he took the job.

"Kernel" and the boy went to New York for a "break" and Kernel didn't tell the boy that he was only there to have a bit of fun, then he was going to shoot himself.

Fantastic film, and will touch all of you, get it!!

5 out of 5 stars The Scent of a Woman from a Blindmans perspective   March 24, 2006

I have suffered complete blindness when my Multiple Schlerosis struck and often when I am having a relapse. So I speak from experience. Sounds are more important and scents like wise, the olfactory sense heightens to such a degree I can sniff an apple to say which has gone bad as well as an orange to find which is the Seville BloodOrange I prefer when shopping. People who know me locally find my sense of smell amusing and often accuse me of being Thomas Harris of Hannibal the Cannibal Lecter fame as I sniff the air. As another recent case will give testimony. A physiotherapist I was attending told me she had a personal reason to wear gloves while I exercised etc, I could smell her problem, she had 'Thrush' an intestinal tract problem. Another friend had developed Diabetes which I warned him to have checked out etc. So having experienced a heightened olfactory sense I can appreciate the Tango scene as a masterful piece in cinematic history. Critiques welcome, but be warned I once did it for my job on a Trade magazine.
