5 out of 5 stars Deep performance from Pacino   September 8, 2008
This true story based film is set in the corruption addled 1970s New York police force, with Serpico as the only cop who wouldn't take the huge bribes on offer. This is a great film, a slow builder but definitely worth the time to see this story unfold. It's a fine movie.

4 out of 5 stars Early Pacino   February 10, 2008
I'd heard a lot about this film before I watched it - about the story; about how it made Pacino's reputation - and consequently expected a lot of it. I'm glad to say that it exceeded my expectations. The story was gripping and extremely well-told; in fact, I can't remember the last time I was so absorbed in a film. It's also interesting to see early Pacino, forging his explosive active style.
Thematically, it takes a different angle to many 70s films, with the liberal cop Serpico coming up against the more typical corrupt and right-wing cops and facing alienation because of his honesty.
A brilliant film that owes a lot to Pacino's performance, but is certainly more than just a line on Pacino's CV. It stands up for itself and merits 130 minutes of your time.

4 out of 5 stars GRIPPING TRUE STORY   September 8, 2006
serpico is the true story of new york cop frank serpico who risked his life and name when he went undercover to expose the failings and deception of fellow cops, which although commendable isnt great when the cops turn against you for turning tout.
The film is delicate at times, poignant, violent and mainly tense and taut and beggars belief at times in challenging the viewer into asking what they would do in the same situation.

5 out of 5 stars Should be watched by ALL cops everywhere - a training film..   March 26, 2005

...if ever there was one.

Serpico (1974) - A key 1970s film from ace director Sid Lumet and featuring one of Pacino's finest performances. The analysis of police corruption and the prejudice, heartbreak and failed relationships that Frank Serpico (Pacino) endured remains psychologically acute and makes for gripping, entertaining 70s cinema at its very best. Superb stuff.

5 out of 5 stars New York’s Finest?   January 15, 2004

Serpico is an excellent entry from that great period of American movie-making that began with Bonnie and Clyde, and which was destroyed by Star Wars and the whole blockbuster phenomenon. Sidney Lumet is the New York movie maker par excellance, nobody else (including Woody Allen) can get to the core of the Big Apple as well as Lumet. The story of Frank Serpico is in that long line of American "a man’s gotta do…" films (i.e. High Noon, etc), and what gives this film its power is that Al Pacino (at the height of his powers as an actor) invests Serpico with real humanity, warmth, courage, anger and all the conflicting emotions that the real Frank Serpico suffered in his lonely battle against corruption and cynicism. This wonderful film is a worthy tribute to a real life hero, and stands easily amongst the classic films of the 70’s.
