A nice little film, where the film-makers heart is in the right place. Ok he didn't have much any money to turn this into a splashy, glossy, bodies being photoshop frame by frame, look beyond that and just enjoy it the spur of the moment. I did.
Aren't you bored of coming of age and coming out films that's full of cliches being release lately.
The surfer, Midget, his mad aunt and her niece reminds me of great expectations. Such a laugh!
Tan Lines will tickle you from down under.

This is the most pointless drivel and excuse for a film ever. With no obvious plot or storyline the film unravels at a snails pace to no obvious or satisfying conclusion. It would have helped if I could have mustered even a shred of empathy towards the characters who were either downright hostile or somewhat lacking in any intelligence. The lousy filming which must have been done by someone under the influence of something, judging by the shakey camera shots screamed to me school project. The whole film frankly left me with a nasty taste in my mouth an absolute waste of time and money.

Some of the reviewers have been incredibly harsh on this film. Sure, the production values aren't out of this world, but the intentions are heartfelt and honest. There is a a distinctly Australian sense of humour that may be lost on some viewers, and the narrative is ambling and unconventional. What better way to tell the story of a teenage boy in a small Australian coastal village? Not a lot happens there, and day-today life is not an electrifying series of dizzying vignettes like what you might have witnessed in other gay films such as 'Head On'.
If you can appreciate the heart of a film without expecting a big budget, unnaturally beautiful actors and a bombastic storyline to buoy it in blockbuster territory, you will enjoy 'Tan Lines'. Its heart is in the right place, the actors are endearing and their performances raw. Seek this out for a pleasant surprise, if films that are different and unafraid of conforming to the norm are what appeal to you.

Those people who have given this film one star clearly don't know their arse from their elbow... it's a great movie - go read some Dickens you idiots then watch it again! It is an unusual, unique, memorable film!

This is a magnificent Australian film on the theme of discovering gay sexual identity and entering adulthood. At first glance this might look like one of those unwatchable surfing and skateboarding movies where the characters are drunk or high or both and mumble indecipherable monosyllables in poorly lit rooms. It isn't. It's gripping, poignant and stylish. It manages to make its points concisely and clearly, but is never too obvious. I was constantly surprised by the turn of events in the plot. It manages to capture all the elements of its genre, without losing itself into a cryptic, meaningless and messy mystery, but be assured, this is no tale of Adam meets Steve and they live happily ever after. I have no doubt that the makers intended it to leave you with an uneasy feeling. Highly, highly recommended.
