In preparing for a California road trip, this book has been extremely useful. It offers a range of photographs to give a real sense of what each journey will 'look like' at different stages, it describes each notable location en route and, between descriptions, it describes the actual journey from place to place.
It includes as number of suggested journeys, but you can pick and mix parts of different routes to suit your own itinerary.
It has also been recently revised, in January 2007, and so is up to date.
A good buy.
