A very entertaining Victorian Romance November 27, 2002 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
"Devil May Care" is a hilarious historical romance between good and evil set in the late 19th century in England. Lady Eden Spencer is a beautiful young lady brought up in a convent. She is an angel, the "good" itself. She wants to take her vows and become a nun. But her uncle has other plans. He wants her to leave the convent and marry well. Eden is against the idea but The Mother Superior convinces her to go out into the world and experience it fully in order to be able to help others. She is an innocent girl who doesn't know anything about the world and confides in her cousin Reggie.Reggie is a funny example of a society gentleman and he advices Eden to ask Damien Sinclair the Earl of Blackstone who is the "Devil" himself for help. Damien is a handsome young man whose reputation in society cannot be worse. He breaks hearts, he is a gambler and he hasn't got a good bone in his body.Eden is terrified of him but at the same time she is attracted to him as well. She bravely approches him at a ball and asks him to introduce her to all the evil things in the world for money. Damien is intrigued by Eden and he takes her innocence as a challenge and he decides to seduce her.Their funny, exciting and wonderful story begins. They both try to hide their attraction for each other but destiny steps in and they fall deeply in love. The story line is fast-paced and full of action. They fight and they get closer and closer to each other's heart and emotions. Eden finds out Damien's past and Damien solves Eden's ghosts from her past. The secondary characters are well developed as well.Especially Reggie is fantastic. His matchmaking behavior makes the reader smile many times. The author has a talent to make her characters alive. Damien and Eden are both wonderful in their process of changing from an innocent convent-bred girl and a cynical rogue into a well matched loving couple. DEVIL MAY CARE is the first volume in the Sinclair brothers series and it has an excellent start. The historical background is very weak but the communication between the characters is well written and entertaining. I recommend it to all historical romance readers and I look forward to reading the other two books in the series.
