5 out of 5 stars Great walking in Brittany   August 5, 2005

Judy Smith's book is much more than a collection of walks: it is also full of interesting and enticing information about the history, landscape and culture of Brittany, the Celtic heartland of France. As a resident of Brittany, I have used the book with pleasure, enjoying walks in stunning scenery and gaining a greater understanding of my environment in the process. The directions and sketch maps are full and accurate, with details of all the sights on route, both natural and man-made. In addition to the main walks - which cover all four departments of Brittany - there are suggestions for dozens of others in the same areas. The author also provides an overview of each walk and handy summaries of practicalities (such as length, parking, level of difficulty) at the beginning. The walks themselves vary from coastal routes to the hills, lakes, rivers and deep forests of the interior. There is something to suit all levels of ability in terms of length and gradient. The book is a good read in its own right and eminently usable as a way of discovering both well-known and more secluded walking trails in an exceptional region of France.
