William Fotheringham' s book covers every significant cyclist of the competitive sport with especial emphasis on the stars of recent decades. Fotheringham knows and understands his subject inside out and speaks with absolute authority in a manner which makes the substance of the matter sing in one' s inner ear like mature tubulars as the stories roll along. Combining understanding, knowledge and personal experience of decisive race locations he transports the reader into defining moments of sporting history. The unlikely influence of newspapers in the development of the sport is as well documented as those careers interacting with them. Tribulation, personality, fixes, polemica and glory recounted by a master wordsmith.
A must for any cycling fan! January 19, 2004 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
From the excellent graphic photos with stunning scenery and gruelling ascents to the touching history of the world's greatest cycle races this book is a triumph of cycling journalism. The book is awash with a kaliedosope of colour and monochrome photos from races past and present, with a superb running narrative by accomplished cycling and sports writer Will Fotheringham. The book covers all aspects of road racing and the races and cyclists that have made it superlative to all other sports in terms of the depth and richness of it's fabric. However, I might add that this is is a jack of all trades but master off none as it doesn't deeply discuss any one single aspect of cycling preferring to enlighten the reader with a concise summary for the sake of brevity and interest. Sean Kelly's insightful introduction sets the tone and quality that is maintained for the rest of the book. Very well recommended, especially for young cycling fans or as a present for the cyclist in your life.
