5 out of 5 stars The Rough Guide to the Loire Valley   October 11, 2004

Why, oh why didn't this wonderful guide exist 20 years ago? Day after laborious day of being dragged around chateaux and wine producers by eager parents during summer holidays could have been avoided. For on a recent, and dreaded, return trip to the Loire Valley I was amazed to have a whole new side to the region revealed to me -and all thanks to this impeccable Rough Guide. It is as informative and useful as all Rough Guides tend to be, with a good mix of factual as well as historical details, but it is also written by someone who clearly knows what it is to be a traveller. For the text contains asides that I don't believe any other guide would feature -and it this stuff that gives one the feeling of having discovered the valley for oneself. Fluent, clear and at times very witty, this guide can only be described as an absolute must. Bring it on for the guide of all guides.
