Long Walk to Freedom February 5, 2004 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
In 1950 Sean Rothery cycled from Dieppe to Rome and back in the poverty of post war Europe. Half a century later he fulfils another dream, which begins on 10 May 1994 until the final day on 11 September. This is an enthralling account of a 2300km walk from the North Sea to the Mediterranean, taking him from Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany to France, Switzerland and Italy. In Flanders he remembers Joseph Gaffney, his uncle, in the demoralising retreat from Mons. In Diest (Belgium) he wonders if the Orange Order knows King Billy's ancestors came from this most Catholic place. Ghosts of the past are revisited most poignantly in the Alps where his friends Fred and Andre died in climbing accidents. He relives the action and the drama of his own accident in 1967 in Switzerland and how it took three years before he could walk without the aid of crutches a walking stick and ended his career as a rock climber. It is an interesting read, not just for the geographical and potted historical references and detailed hand-drawn maps introducing each chapter. It also includes a fine selection of the author’s own pencil illustrations of buildings he encountered or stayed in. Throughout his retelling of his journey he writes about the eccentric fellow walkers he met, characters of all nationalities.
