5 out of 5 stars Great but see also the online version   May 22, 2001

A very good guide to France. Not for light reading but a reliable guide to hotels and restuarants. I've bought it every year for the last 20 years. However, users might like to know that the entire guide is also available free online together with other information. A search engine should find the site. I think the hard copy remains invaluable for practical use while in France but the web version has distinct advantages too for advance planning(apart from being free - so you can see before you buy). You can search the online version in various ways and print out the results. The site also has route planning services for Europe which link to the guide. Finally, in many cases there is a bit more info available online ie the short line of description which is included in the hard copy for starred entries is also there in the online version for many non-starred entries.

5 out of 5 stars Still the definitive guide to eating in France   April 12, 2001

This is the standard to which all French chefs aspire and three stars is the greatest accolade they can achieve, in spite of more new-wave guides coming along. Entries only get into this guide when they have proven their durability and reliability, so it is utterly dependable. What is interetsing to those of us who buy it every other year, is to see how entries change, some promoted to one or two stars, occasionally someone demoted or removed altogether, eg Jean Bardet at Tours for a year when he was found out using "false" ingredients ! The guide is so logical in every way that it can be used as a road map and street guide to major cities too.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding French Hotel and Restaurant Guide   March 24, 2001
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

This 2001 edition of the definitive French Hotel and Restaurant Guide will provide Francophiles like us with endless pleasure. Clear symbols explain facilities over a complete range of hotels and restaurants from outstanding to simple. These include the coveted Michelin starred restaurant symbol which locates the best restaurants in France. There are also symbols to indicate cheaper menus, and the Bib Gourmand restaurants which provide good food, usually regional, at good prices. The Guide also ties in with the 1cm:2km Michelin maps by underlining in red on the maps places which have entries. It's a pleasure to see the latest annual update of this Guide, which now helpfully includes e-mail addresses. It is as invaluable as ever if you're travelling in France. If you take just one Guide with you make sure it's this one.
