not about a cooking school December 17, 2006 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Very disappointing, the only good thing in it is the food. It's terribly condescending and author's ego is all over the place. But the most annoying part is that while it claims on the back that this is a book about a cooking school and anyone about to open a small business should read it, this is not the case at all. She only talks about the school a bit at the beginning and then we are just left with her life, her view of the French, which is not very exciting, and an awful lot of adjectives.
Sickly Sweet February 19, 2005 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
I have read many books about life in France and have lived in the Charente region for over a year. Susan Loomis has written about her experiences that are close to her heart, in what is a very pleasant country. This is no reason to be critical. However I feel that her approach is sickly sweet rather that informative. I found her reaction to the 9/11 atrocity to be too much and far too self centred. Yes she is an American by birth, but we were all affected by what we saw on our screens that day. I would suggest she use fewer adjectives and reduce the amount of sugar used and come back down to earth and reality.
Cooking the books July 29, 2003 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
While I truly loved the author's first book, On Rue Tatin, the sequel didn't grab me as much. I would still recommend it over others in the genre, specifically the somewhat mean-spirited "Bon Courage." You can tell that Susan Loomis truly loves what she is doing but at the same time I felt that she was somewhat removed from the story she was telling. The passion of the first book didn't come through here. But then again, now she has two children to take care of in addition to a husband and full time cooking school business, so maybe she has other things on her mind these days! Still a good read.
