Beautifully written, accurately researched and giving enough space to describing how individual sites fitted into the larger picture of southern Gaul. During four years living near Colonia Nemausus in the shadow of the Pont du Gard, this book never left my side and needs replacing.

5 out of 5 stars A fine account of Southern France's Classical heritage   February 28, 2001

James Bromwich has really done his research. He has finally brought together a disparate clutter of ruins and reconciled some of that Empire feel that is so often missing outside Italy. For anyone with time to bathe in the past here is the key to some stimulating adventures.
