INSANE September 14, 2008 Recorded in Texas in 1989, this is the first professionally filmed Hicks performance. That its a tour de force shold go without saying; ditto that its an(other) reminder of what was lost when Hicks died of cancer 5 years later.
At this early stage Hick's act was more rooted in observational stand-up, with interludes of the politicised rantings that characterised his stupendous post-Gulf War 1 routuines, but was nevertheless infused with the eloquent anger that gave his work the resonance it still enjoys. Pure blinding genius. Regarding the Denis Leary rip-off of Hicks at least three famous stand-up comedians have gone on the record stating they believe Leary stole not just some of Hicks' material but his persona and attitude. As a result of this, it is claimed that after Bill Hicks' death from pancreatic cancer, an industry joke began to circulate about Leary's transformation and subsequent success (roughly; "Question: Why is Denis Leary a star while Bill Hicks is unknown? Answer: Because there's no cure for cancer."

Quintessential performance from this much missed comedic genius. He will shock you but he will entertain you and make you laugh out loud. His best live DVD only slightly marred by the addition of annoying superimposed images.
His greatest performance February 25, 2007 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
This performance by Bill Hicks is probably his greatest that's been captured on film. From start to finish pure magic. It's incredible to watch how Bill time after time, digs himself (intentionally) into a comedic hole and by some miracle (call it talent) gets himself out of it. Bill Hicks is not for everybody's taste. For some people he was too downright dirty and too brutal. Some people may not like the way he demonized people (and himself). But all a time there is this quality of compassion, caring and humanity too- yearning for honesty. Bill seemed really to care about his work and his audience. You could say, that you can feel his love. And you can see how Bill is enjoying himself. He is having fun at the stage and so is his audience.
I have owned this DVD about a year now, and I've seen it three times in that time and I could easily watch it again. How many films you can watch three four times in one year, and still be interested seeing it again? Not many I guess.

Im going to assume the reader of this review already knows a bit about what Hicks is about. This is more a review for those that are already initiated, but are unsure about whether to purchase this DVD. My advice is to buy ASAP! This is an essential performance, Picture quality is good, Bill is on top form.. and these are different angles of attack on his same theme's. Particularly love the attack on shopping malls and on certain modern "rock stars" (the George Michael comments show a profound insight, with the benfit of hindsight:). On top of that you get brilliant extra's of other rare early performances. highly reccomended for fans
Genius August 9, 2006 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
Overused word eh? but TOTALLY justified in Bills case. Hicks takes stand-up onto a different planet, part preacher part philosopher, always hillarious and always RIGHT. Imagine coming away from a comedy performance and having your view of the world changed, this was Hicks's genius not just the finest stand-up ever but one of the sharpest minds of the 20th century.... every THINKING person should hear a Hicks performance, and this DVD is a good place to start.
