Catweazle it ain't November 7, 2007 An amusing film which will no doubt entertain the family for a few hours, after which it's quickly forgotten about. If you think you might have heard this storyline before, look no further than the delightful, and infinitely better, 70's children's tv series, "Catweazle." Starring the Birdman from "Worzel Gummidge," Geoffrey Bayldon featured as an inept magician who is transported to modern times by a spell that went wrong. He spends the remainder of the two series trying to get back, whilst getting into much the kind of slapstick situations this film does. Of course, Catweazle was from a more innocent time and the comedy was more subtle, you didn't need to talk down to kids. It also had a pagan/magical bent that appealed to adults. Given the fact it is unlikely Catweazle will get remade - and they have tried! (Bayldon says he is too old) Just Visiting/Les Visiteurs is a worthy attempt to bring back the idea for an, arguably, more sophisticated audience who have a limited attention span.
Dull September 19, 2005 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
The concept is great - the original Frnch film pretty good - this is dull & uninsipred.Beyond a toilet bowl & expensive perfume - ignores any comparisson between today and the middle ages.
excellent September 6, 2003 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Very good and very very funny! The whole family enjoyed it and the favourite scene was when the french noble and his servant first encounted the toilet! Jean Reno was excellent and it is definitely worth watching.
A Kids Film But Great For Adults Too May 6, 2003 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
One of the most enjoyable childrens films I have seen. In fact the kids spent more time laughing at me and the wife cracking up at the film than they did at the film itself!A simple storyline but a good one, Reno's expressions are superb, lots of zany action. Thoroughly recommended.
A fast and funny remake of a French cinematic masterpiece February 7, 2003 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
Just Visiting is a witty rehash of a winning French movie first aired at the Cannes Festival. Upgraded for the new millenium, it features much of the same storyline and jokes, but in English. Set in America, the story revolves around brave mediaeval knight Thibault (Reno), and his squire Andre (Clavier) who are thrust into the future by a spell gone wrong (English wizards... huh!). Much hilarity ensues as the duo must find a way to return home, and survive the many sights and sounds of a modern day city. The DVD itself is very slim on extras, but this really is a funny film. However, it is not nearly as good as the original Les Visiteurs, which although outdated, contains Reno and Clavier at their comic best. This movie is a rehash, and indeed FEELS like a rehash as it is obvious to the viewer that Reno and Clavier have done all of this before. This is, however, a very funny film and I would recommend it to you all. I still prefer Les Visiteurs, but if you're not a fan of French films at all, then by all means give this a go. I doubt you'll be disappointed. Worthy of mention is Malcolm McDowell who is brilliant as the English wizard - my favourite character.
