Easy Breezy Read, 3.5 stars September 6, 2007 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
This is the rags to riches story of Nell Gwynne, a one time orange girl and then actress of The King's Theatre who captured the heart of Charles II, The Merry Monarch. With her bright wit and charm, she captures the attention of Charles II and she becomes one of his (many!) long time mistresses.
While I thoroughly enjoyed the story, I felt the characters could have been better defined. Maybe it's because I've read Forever Amber and Dark Angels and I kept wishing for more like that. The author did a nice job of defining the Reformation society and the court, but it just wasn't enough for me. Buckingham's intrigues came off as too lighthearted, Queen Catherine a non-existent sap, and Louise a whiny immature child. I could never figure out how Lord Bockhurst started out as a worthless hellion that Nell dumped to being one of her greatest friends and supporters, along with Buckingham.
All in all an enjoyable entertaining read, just not something to write home and friends about, one of those books that will go right back to the library and probably soon forgotten. 3.5 stars.
"Pretty, witty Nell Gwynne" March 13, 2007 18 out of 18 found this review helpful
The rags to riches story of "pretty witty" Nell Gwynne. Nell grows up in a brothel watching her mothers intoxicated lifestyle and prostitution which she later see her older sister, Rose become involved with. And promises herself this is not the life she will have.
As a teenager Nell becomes an orange seller, selling oranges outside the Kings Theatre which has newly opened after the Plague and the great fire which almost destroyed the City. This is where she first catches the eye of King Charles II, its not long before Nell becomes an actress herself at the Kings Theatre. Working her way to become the leading Comedy actress of her day.
She becomes King Charles II mistress, along with many others and becomes a favourite with the King as well as the public. Despite the Kings many other mistresses Nell became a favourite and it was Nell, of all the woman in the King's life who was the only one mentioned on the King's deathbed uttering theinfamous "let not poor Nelly starve", although Nell only outlived the King by 2 years.
This was fabulously written and for anyone who has been fascinated by the lovely Nell (as I have) this is a fabulous read, there are not many novels out there based on Nell, I think this is the only one that I know of solely based on her, although she appears in others based on Charles and his mistresses.
The descriptions really send you back to Seventeenth century London and the court of King Charles II with the descriptions that are so vivid and really help you to picture the scene.
A wonderful book and highly recommended.
