5 out of 5 stars a ggod tale well told   August 10, 2008

I have a stressful job, two kids under the age of 2, and no free time. So a book had better grip me on a word-by-word basis. I'm pleased to report that this book did that. It doesn't assume, a la Shama, that one has all the time in the world. But it gives enough detail to make a narrative come alive. The book focuses on the top people during the 1814-1848 period, although it gives a lot of background going back to 1789.

Very few history books seem to me to get right balance between narrative, analysis, entertainment, and general social and economic background. This one did. I am not qualified to judge its originality, or compare it to other scholarship in the area. But it seems well based on primary and secondary sources.

Enjoy!
