Good Content, dodgy hardware March 9, 2006 22 out of 22 found this review helpful
On the whole I'm pleased with this - certainly beats having to lug a big dictionary around. Two criticisms: 1. The keyboard is awful. Although brand new, the nasty little rubber keys aren't very responsive and tend to stay stuck down and have to be prised back up with a fingernail or pencil tip. The lid feels very flimsy and I have no faith in it surviving being knocked about in a bag - perhaps designed for a jacket pocket? 2. The keyboard has a French layout ( well, I suppose that's fine if you're French!)and the functions - even something as simple as a delete key - are not intuitively obvious. Yes,there is an instruction leaflet, but we all read those with loving care and carry them round with us, don't we? Overall, I would probably buy another one if I were learning another language, but it could be improved by a bit more attention to hardware design.
Franklin BFQ-450 July 18, 2005 25 out of 25 found this review helpful
I bought one of these about 2 months ago. We go to France quite a lot and it has quickly become indispensable. We had previously been lugging around a 2kg paper dictionary because the smaller ones are inadequate. The BFQ-450 has translated virtually every word we have looked up. I can understand the previous comment about the construction but actually it seems to hold up reasonably under use and is pretty neat. The size is about optimum -small enough to fit in a shirt pocket and just about large enough for keyboard entry. The latter is AZERTY not QWERTY as the unit is French. I thought this would be a problem but for typing in the odd word it is fine (now I know that 'm' is way over to the right). The display is large and clear and both it and the keyboard are protected by the clam shell lid. The user interface is slightly quirky but worth getting used to for more complex functions such as verb conjugation.
A great gadget for improving you French October 2, 2004 16 out of 18 found this review helpful
It's much handier than a paper dictionary and you're more likely to find a word. The spell checker will suggest words based on bad English spelling. For example, if someone pronounced "chateau" to you, being an Anglophone you might (in a fit of ignorance) type in "shato" - no problem, the dictionary will suggest "chateau or chateaux". I use it while watching French TV to expand my vocab.
It works well. December 16, 2003 37 out of 37 found this review helpful
As an easily portable pocket dictionary that works very well. Good points: It is easy to use and comes with clear instructions. It is small and easy to carry around. Typing in words is usually faster than looking them up in a paper dictionary. It has every word I have looked up so far. Conjugation of verbs is comprehensive.Bad points: It feels cheap for 50. The back is not flat, so if you are using it on a flat surface, it rocks when press the bottom row of keys. Lid is difficult to open with big round fingers. The grammar guide is very basic.
