4 out of 5 stars English? I don't think so!   August 4, 2008

Generally this machine works beautifully. It carries a hefty load of information and response times are very fast, in most cases virtually instant. I received the machine as a birthday present and for the most part I am entirely satisfied with it. It does, however, suffer from one fault which is either major or minor depending on whether or not you were expecting to use the particular function involving pronunciation.

The box proclaims "Improve your Vocabulary, Word Choice, Pronunciation etc." and it is pronunciation where the problem arises. It is fine if you think that "Institute" is pronounced "Institoot" or that "Schedule" should sound as though it has a "K" in it. I find it difficult to conceive of a situation whereby a purchaser from either side of the Atlantic would require the services of this function. It would be useful to non-english speakers to be aware that this anomaly exists before purchase.

That apart it is a useful tool with sensibly sized keys which functions well.

3 out of 5 stars Much better than the non-speaking version   August 1, 2008

Although a little complicated to use at first, the TGA490 is compact, acts as a currency and metric convertor. The key board is easy to use. The only problem is that you can only use pre-prepreed phrases for translation. Compared to the non speaking model, the gender used with this model is correct.
