5 out of 5 stars Better than you'd think - a great update of a pop classic   February 29, 2008

It seems ages since Girls Aloud released this song now but i can still remember clearly that radio gave it hardly any airplay yet still it managed to chart at an impressive number 4 in the chart in the Christmas number 1 week, one of the most competetive weeks in the musical calendar.

Truly this is testamant to both the immense mainstream appeal of their songs, whichever sound they take up, but also to the devotion of their fans. I Think We're Alone Now is the Girls take on the classic 1988 Tiffany song. Perhaps the most notable improvement is that the Girls vocals' are considerably better than Tiffany's and while i suppose the original had a certain charm in it's late 80s pop sound, the Girls version is seriously beefed up with a great beat and guitar hook that runs in the intro and chorus.

The version here is actually a radically different version from what first appeared on the Girls' greatest hits, a version that followed the original far more closely. Anyway, it was the glossy christmas party pop-fun feel to the track that helped it be so appealing but i'm sure one of the main attractions for fans here is the b-side, Why Do It?

While, like the a-side, i don't think it represents some of the Girls' finest work, it is far from bad. Why Do It? is essentially a Nadine solo effort and packs a great bassline. The track is also one of those brilliant gems that are written by the Girls themselves and in this case, the lyrics are perhaps the highlight to the song. Well worth checking out.

2. Why Do It?

5 out of 5 stars Gotta love it   December 17, 2007

While this is admitatly not as great as their other singles, this still beats most of the current pop pack and gets you dancing and singing along.

Considering we're talking about a TV-made group, Girls Aloud have had a long run of shockingly great singles, even a few quality album tracks... But it seems the luck and/or genius has run dry with this awful pseudo-commercial dance cover of the irritating late 80s Tiffany hit.
