At times inaccurate and unhelpful February 24, 2004 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Sorry to disagree with the majority here, but on the two things I wanted to do in botswana - contact the national parks and do a drive around the north of okovango - this book let me down badly. The telephone numbers are out of date, and there was no warning as to the road condition between Savuti and Seronga - ie, that there is no real road there and that you would be foolhardy to attempt it. Instead, it is marked as a decent road on the maps provided in this book!I got the bradt guide as well, and found it much better on road conditions, with good directions and help, and it also had the correct phone numbers for the Department of Wildlife and National Parks. As always with LP books it is clear and well laid out; but on the things I tested it on, it let me down so I can't recommend it.
Accurate, informative and compact May 20, 2003 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I own several guidebooks on Botswana and this one by Lonely planet is the best yet. The information is accurate, and extra details are given (email addresses, phone numbers and special directions).A whole range of places are covered - including 'off the beaten track' destinations, yet the book is compact and easy to read. Bizarrely, it fails to give the excellent Nata Lodge a mention in the section on Nata?! which is why I only rated it 4 stars!
A Comprehensive Travel Guide March 28, 2003 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I am very pleased with this book. It contains all the information that I could ever want to know about my forthcoming trip to Botswana. The book has sections on: 1. general facts about Botswana 2. Facts for the visitor 3. travel to and from Botswana 4. Travel within Botswana 5. Gaborone (the capital) 6. Eastern Botswana 6. A Wildlife Guide 7. North-Eastern Biotswana 8. The Kalahari 9. Victoria Falls 9. Language. In short this book has a bit of everything. This book has made me feel like an expert on Botswana. My only complaint about the book is that the writing is a bit too small. I will forgive the publishers for this however as the small writing is due to the publishers wanting to get as much information as possible into a book that is small enough to be taken on holiday with you. If you are going to Botswana, then this is the book you should get.
I took this book everywhere with me! January 19, 2003 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is interesting and comprehensive, as lonely planet books generally are. It gives an interesting insight into the history of the country and it's people, as well as it's current situation and the problems it faces. Information given was generally accurate, although I found that some prices had changed since it was published. If you're going to Botswana, make sure you buy a travel guide before you go, I'd definately recommend this.
