Lonely Planet Guide to Finland June 29, 2003 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
I bought this book a year ago now and found it pretty poor! I've been to finland 10 or more times and feel I know the country and its people a lot more than the author of this book! His descriptions of Finnish attitudes and temproment are so stereotyped and dated. Fascinating Museums, Buildings and Shops do not seem to feature! I can not comprehend how some one could produce this kind of book, about such a fascinating and unique place! Finland is a dynamic vibrant and varied place and has a lot more to offer than this guide would suggest! Its a real dissapointment, it does however carry some useful logistical info, trains, hotels/ hostels ect. But most of this info can be found on the net or from the many Tourist Infomation Offices in Finland. I do hope he's done some home work for this edition!

I think the book is great, I have lived in Finland for over a year now with my Finnish Hubbie, and we both have discovered new things from the book. My father also enjoyed it and found the history part very interesting, as his knowledge of Finland was limited. Yes some of the info was a bit out of date, some resturants are no longer there for example, but that is always the case.
Quite brilliant! May 15, 2001 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
... I think this guide is magnificent, all transport links and their service qualitiy is here - including contact tel. numbers and where to go, which are invaluable. Great work, I have been in Finland for 8 months and I still use it for reference (even my Finnish fiancee is impressed)!... I dont need train/bus times, these invariably change anyway. Keep up the good work, it encouraged me to buy the Sweden guide (only 4* for this one though)
Most disapointing Lonely Planet to date March 19, 2001 16 out of 19 found this review helpful
Finland is an interesting country that can be a great treat to explore. Unfortunately, to unlock its potential you could do worse than completely ignore this book. Not only does this book have massive omissions of factual information you would expect to find as standard in any half decent guide book, such as traveling times between major cities and other relevent travel information, this book also takes the self indulgent tone of a student rag - without the humour. It has been suggested that Lonely Planet have become too big for the sort of feely guide books that are their trade mark. But one thing is for certain, if the editors are prepared to continue releasing this sort of useless rubbish then they will lose more than just this customer. Shame on Lonely Planet, now trading on a once good name whilst retaining none of the substance on which that name was built and the traveller depends.
