Better than nothing but scale too small and no city maps August 16, 2005 60 out of 60 found this review helpful
Having just returned from a 17 day trip to Cuba, with visits to Havana, then driving to Vinales (170km to the East), back to Havana, down to Cienfuegos, Trinidad and up to Cayo Santa Maria, then back to Havana, I depended on this map and found it severely wanting. Cuba has very limited signage on any roads to anywhere - imaging driving round the M25 with only 10% of the existing road signs to tell you what the next junction is for and you have a good idea - and you need an accurate map and this isn't it. The scale @ 1:850,000 is too small to show accurate turnings off, so you think you're going through a village and turning left but you discover that there are multiple options and not just the "only" turn left the map suggests. Second, there are no individual city maps or enlargements of the main towns so you end up having to guess which turn might be which, especially going to, through and from Havana. I had the Rough Guide book which did not fill the gaps as its Greater Havana map was not clear enough and did not have the street names visible. Third, there is no guidance (because the scale is not sufficient) that motorways just stop - literally, running onto grass, and you have to do a u-turn and try and find a junction. Fellow traveller had a map that appeared to have roughly double the scale of this one. See if you can find that one. Having said that, this is better than nothing at all, and there were very limited maps on sale in Cuba. Do not depend on the car rental company!
