Buy it. Buy it now. October 2, 2008 "How to Start Your Own Country" is, quite simply, excellent. The two discs contain all of the episodes as well as Citizen TV (which is really very funny), deleted scenes and a nice set of special features. Danny Wallace is a genius! Great for watching on a quiet day in, and it would make a fantastic gift for anyone with a good sense of humour. Plus, for just under 9 it's a bargain!
Not bad September 11, 2008 I didn't manage to catch all these episodes when they first aired on TV, I probably saw 2 all the way through and I liked what I saw.
I was also a fan of Danny's book, so I had no hesitation in purchasing this DVD.
The DVD itself is full of so many extras, it's quite incredible really. In fact I would go as far to say that for extras this is the best DVD I own.
While very similar to Dave Gorman, Danny does have his own style of course, but if you did enjoy Gorman's TV shows, then you will enjoy this.
I did however find the ending to the show leaving more questions than answers. There is deffinately scope for a follow up DVD, but I think a couple more episodes in the series was probably necessary in telling the story.
All Hail Danny February 9, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This Series was immense, Danny Wallace ventured forth with a scheme much reminiscent of "Join Me" and started his own country (which is still going) in his small london apartment,i think this series was hillarious and you should definately buy it! Its well worth your time and money . what are you waiting for?
Thought there would be more January 26, 2007 7 out of 14 found this review helpful
Let me break it down. I watched the series thinking Mr. Wallace would actually start his own country and face all the obstacles there are. What I saw was 5 episodes of him going round the world and basically doing a documentary on them and their customs. In the last episode he actually tries to join the UN. Every episode should have been like that: Trying to actually start a country.
He interviews various authorities on government, constitution, punishment (including capital), etc... He even interviews two self-proclaimed European kings.
Instead of doing a whole episode on Caital Punishment in the States, he should have actually started a country. he never does it, yes, online, but that doesnt really count, now does it?
I thought he's mount insurmountable odds to found an actual country (and not in his flat), but he does something that basicaly, we could all do: Set up a website, call it a country and invite people to join.
Where's the challenge in that?

Yes, yes, I am probably biased but as the New Utopia UK Pro Consul General and having been featured in episode 5 of the DVD series I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed participating in this venture and meeting King Danny Wallace the first ! I hope they will have included many of the deleted scenes from his visit with me which lasted over FIVE hours ! So anyway, definitely ordering a few of these DVD's to pass on to the Government of New Utopia aka Prince Lazarus the 1st. For the latest developments visit our UK site at new-utopia dot co dot uk...
