Novice Spanish Speaker October 25, 2006 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
Having wanted to learn Spanish for many years, I decided to buy this product and my God, what a difference!!! This learning technique is so simple - so much so, you wonder why your school days didn't teach you this way!
It does state, however, when you first begin the CD's that you should never go back and rewind the tutorials but I found that certain sections needed further understanding. This said, it is relatively easy to grasp, the male pupil really is THICK and can be a little frustrating - although he does give you time to think sometimes - the CD's are repetitive but repetitive in a useful and fantastic way.
If you want to learn the basics quickly and informatively, this product is the one for you. Since doing this, I've been to Spain and was understood, got what I wanted and was congratulated on my efforts - not bad for 10 hours of learning.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!
Suspend your disbelief - this really DOES work! October 15, 2006 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
I've tried a few language tapes, but never lasted more than about an hour before dying of boredom. Michel Thomas' method is different to anything I've heard before, and it's also genuinely interesting to listen to as he drops in little facts and snippets around the learning. Within a couple of hours I was 'thinking' in Spanish for limited phrases, and quickly built a handy knowledge of Spanish.
It's true that I'm only 20% of the way through the CD's, but I'm actually looking forward to the rest of the course - which is a first for me. His method of teaching and implanting knowledge is very subtle, and you won't even realise how much you're taking in while you're listening.
One minor point about the two 'other' students on the CD's - I THINK the male student is SUPPOSED to be rubbish; the intention being that you are encouraged by not being the worst student in the class of three! Certainly you'll find yourself mentally correcting your fellow-student as he messes up yet another word, but this just helps your own learning.
Excellent language course. Highly recommended.
brill! October 2, 2006 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Really good!!!! Michel Thomas's method actually does work! And you end up stringing sentances confidently together by the end of the first 45 minutes! However, only 4 stars becuase the 2 students used on the CD are a little bit annoying and you can hear Michel Thomas breathing or swallowing or something which is a little bit scary/funny!!? Overall though it is a brilliant way of learning you just have to give the first 10 minutes a chance and don't switch it off becuase it soes work!
Great I actually remember it, but.... August 10, 2006 5 out of 9 found this review helpful
I found this quite good, and it really does stick in your mind. The only thing i found extremely annoying was the fact that MT either has a really dry mouth while talking or a really wet one and makes irritating noises because of this while talking, which gets on my nerves, but someone else may not even notice this. Apologies MT.
Brilliant system, shame about the lack of nouns June 12, 2006 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
MT's is a great system if, like me, you don't want to learn phrases parrot fashion (I have no idea how people remember just strings of syllables) but want to learn how the language fits together. You cover present, future, conditional and past tenses and the way MT divides verbs up into "tracks" is extremely useful. One big thing - not so great for nouns and I think I need more vocabulary than this offers. Realistically though, on 8 CDs, if you're not using it in conjunction with classes, what else do you expect?
It is also Latin-American pronunciation, though he does generally state where Castilian is different.
This makes it sound drier than it is. You have to feel sorry for the male student though. You cringe when you hear him do something wrong and there's a pained silence from MT! (whereupon in my case you laugh and are glad that you're just on the other end of a pair of headphones)
